Graeme McDowell, Francesco Molinari and Ryan Palmer are among 11 alternates added to the field for the British Open.

The R&A used the world ranking published Monday for its alternate list.

Even though 21 spots remain available through qualifying on the PGA Tour, European Tour and local qualifying across Britain, those will not be enough to fill a 156-man field at Royal Troon on July 14-17.

McDowell has not missed the Open since 2003. If he weren't an alternate, he would have had to try to get one of the four spots available at the French Open and Scottish Open.

The other alternates are James Hahn, Gary Woodland, Patton Kizzire, Fabian Gomez, Jeunghan Wang, Scott Hend, Brendan Steele and Tony Finau.
