Spain 1’s Scott Fernandez and Pedro Oriol booked their place in the semi-finals of the inaugural European Golf Team Championships after victory on Day Two.
“To qualify is perfect – first job done,`` said Oriol. ``I’m very happy that we get the chance to play for medals now, so we will enjoy tomorrow and get ready for Sunday.``
“It was pretty important to start well. We did a really nice job as a team and I’m very happy about it.``

The duo beat Adrian Meronk and Mateusz Gradecki of Poland to top Group C, and a better head-to-head over Portugal and Poland means the Spanish pair are guaranteed a shot at a medal on Sunday at Gleneagles.Earlier in the day, Great Britain 1’s Callum Shinkwin and Lee Slattery kept their medal hopes alive with their 6 and 5 victory over Sweden 1. While Spain 2 joined Shinkwin and Slattery at the top of Group A after they beat Sweden 2 by one hole.
“We had a great day today," said Slattery. "We felt we threw it away a little bit yesterday, so we were a little bit down. But to come out of the blocks like we did today with birdies for us both on the first two holes, we just went on from there. We had a lot of birdies and Callum’s putter has been red-hot. If I hit a shot in close Callum knocks his in before me.
“I’ve never represented Great Britain before. I represented England many years ago, so it’s something different but it’s fun. It’s certainly more relaxed on the first tee and a bit more exciting than playing in a tournament because you’re playing for your livelihood in many respects at those events.
“It’s a slightly different feeling but it’s an enjoyable one. We don’t get to play match play much, so that’s even more enjoyable.”
