Tyrrell Hatton put himself on the brink of European Tour history as he opened up a one-shot lead heading into the final round of the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship.

“I'm pretty happy with that score. I was five-under on the front nine, it felt like a struggle, which sounds really strange. My hands were really cold and I was struggling to start the ball on line. I got lucky a few times, avoiding bunkers, but the putter was working pretty well."

“The back nine, that was a little bit of a struggle again. I had a few opportunities. It was disappointing to bogey 17. Felt like I hit a good tee shot down there and a bit unfortunate with the lie that we got, but I guess it happens. Would have been nice to finish with a two on 18, gave myself a good opportunity and sadly couldn't hole the putt."

A win on Sunday over the Old Course at St. Andrews would give him a third consecutive victory at the event and membership of a very exclusive club.

“It would be pretty surreal I think. I'm certainly going to go out there tomorrow and give it my best. But to join that club would be so special. All I can do, like I said is just give it my best shot and hope for the best.”

Tiger Woods was the last player to win three European Tour events in a row between 2005 and 2007 when he completed a hat-trick of both the WGC-Championship and the WGC-Invitational.

Ernie Els was the last man to do it in a regular event as he won the Heineken Classic every year between 2002 and 2004, while Sir Nick Faldo is the only Englishman to have previously achieved the feat the Irish Open between 1991 and 1993.

Hatton's 66 over the Old Course on Saturday got him to 14 under and meant he had shot nine rounds in the 60s at this event since day one of his first victory in 2016 at a total of 61 under par.

Australian Marcus Fraser was his nearest challenger after a 67 at Kingsbarns Golf Links, with former winner Stephen Gallacher and reigning Race to Dubai champion Tommy Fleetwood at 11 under after both playing the Home of Golf in round three.

“A little bit frustrating in the end," said Fleetwood. "I played really good golf for most of the round, and then I didn't hit it great off the tee for like the last few holes, and even though the course is wide, you're always going to find your ball. It's not easy from the rough. So 16, 17, 18th hole, it's momentum."

“I mean, not surprised to see Tyrrell up there around here and I like the place. Felt fine coming here. I had a nice time on Wednesday. Did some good work. Felt like my game has been in pretty good shape. I don't feel too surprised. It can always go either way and you can either be knackered and hit a low, or you can feel okay. My game's been good, especially today. It's just like I said, a disappointing finish, and I should be a lot closer than what I am.”

Dane Lucas Bjerregaard and Italian Andrea Pavan were four shots off the lead after firing rounds of 69 at the Championship Course Carnoustie.

Finn Tapio Pulkkanen fired a brilliant 64 at Carnoustie to sit at nine under alongside reigning US Open and US PGA Champion Brooks Koepka, Italian Edoardo Molinari, Austrian Matthias Schwab and South African Brandon Stone.

With high winds expected in St Andrews, the final round will be a shotgun start at 08:30 local time.
