Round 4 - Andres Romero claims narrow win

June 26, 2017

Andres Romero had seven birdies in his last 11 holes to win the BMW International Open by 1 stroke on Sunday.

The 837th-ranked Romero carded a bogey-free round of 65, the day's best, to finish on 17-under 271 overall, a shot better than Thomas Detry (66) and overnight leaders Sergio Garcia (69) and Richard Bland (69).

It was Romero's second European Tour title, 10 years after the Argentine won the Players Championship of Europe.

''This is a moment that changes my life,'' the 36-year-old Romero said.

Detry had been leading but the Belgian could only watch as Romero finished with his seventh birdie on Munich's Eichenried course.

Garcia's hopes took a hit with his second bogey on the 16th hole, while Bland had his second bogey on the 17th. Both ended with birdies but it wasn't enough to force a playoff.

Rikard Karlberg (66) was fifth at 14 under, a stroke ahead of Tommy Fleetwood, who finished with an eagle for a 67, and Renato Paratore (68).

Hennie Otto (69) and Nacho Elvira (66) were 12 under, ahead of defending champion Henrik Stenson (69) and American David Lipsky (70).

Round 3 - Sergio Garcia & Richard Bland share lead

June 25, 2017

Masters champion Sergio Garcia edged closer to his third title of the season when he fired a 67 to share the lead with England's Richard Bland going into the final round of the BMW International Open.

The Spanish star, playing in Europe for the first time since capturing the Masters in Augusta in April, had led after birdies on the 12th and 13th holes before 44-year-old Bland responded.

The Englishman, who had played out of the water on the 11th to hole a 20-footer, jumped out into a two-shot lead.

He holed out from the fairway on the 13th, but Garcia hit a fine approach into the 15th and a better tee shot into the 17th to move alongside him.

"I think it was a good, solid day," Garcia told www.europeantour.com, as his 67 was matched by Bland with both men standing at 13 under par for the three rounds.

"Obviously a couple of little putts there at the end that looked like they were going to go in and didn't but, overall, I felt like I played nicely.

Garcia, who carded seven birdies, added: "It's nice but it doesn't mean that it's finished. Still we have a long day tomorrow. We've got to go out there, play well again and see if we can pull it off."

Bland is playing in his 410th European Tour event but has yet to clinch a title.

"I hit some really good shots out there and I hit a couple of scrappy ones coming in but my short game saved me," said Bland.

"Got my feet wet and holed a second shot into 13. So yeah, kind of ran pretty much into everything."

Swede Joakim Lagergren, who had shared the overnight lead, is 12 under, two shots clear of Belgian Thomas Detry and Argentinian Andres Romero.

Round 2 - Big guns chase the lead

June 24, 2017

Sergio Garcia and Henrik Stenson head the chasing pack going into the weekend at the BMW International Open as they trail leaders Joakim Lagergren and Joel Stalter by one stroke.

Masters champion Garcia is playing his first event on European soil since his triumph at Augusta in April and shot a two-under round of 70 on Friday, leaving him eight under at the halfway point in Munich.

Sweden's Stenson, who will bid to defend his British Open title at Royal Birkdale next month, is level with Garcia after shooting a three-under 69 in his second round.

Stenson's compatriot Lagergren started on the 10th and used a flurry of three straight birdies before the turn to help propel himself to a 66, the lowest score of the day.

"It was great out there," Lagergren told www.europeantour.com. "I had a lot of fun out there. Playing really, really good, especially from tee-to-green. So I'm happy with that.

"It's a little bit more windy, yes. I would say the greens are a bit smaller when it's this windy but if you're still hitting really good shots out there, it's scoreable."

Frenchman Stalter will go out last alongside Lagergren on Saturday following a 68 that featured six birdies and two bogeys.

"I played really well," Stalter said. "Gave myself a lot of opportunities. "I'll keep doing the job here and hitting good shots, making putts, and we'll see where I stand on Sunday."

Round 1 - Sergio Garcia just off the pace

June 23, 2017

Sergio Garcia opened his first event in Europe since his Masters win by shooting a bogey-free 6-under 66 to lie two strokes off the lead at the BMW International Open on Thursday.

Wade Ormsby (64) took the overnight lead from Thomas Detry (65), and Joost Luiten and Thorbjorn Olesen (66) were tied for third with Garcia.

''I felt like I played quite well, not spectacular, but very consistent,'' Garcia said.

Garcia opened with six birdies while Ormsby, who arrived at the Eichenried course on the back of three missed cuts, returned to fine form with eight.

''I had a fast start out there, turned in 30 on the front nine, and then kind of kept it going on the back,'' the Australian said.

Detry had a bogey on the first hole but recovered with six birdies and an eagle.

Defending champion Henrik Stenson (67) was among 12 players tied for sixth.
