The Dutchman opened with six consecutive birdies at Penati Golf Resort to finish the day two shots clear of his closest challengers, Spaniard Samuel Del Val and England’s Jack Senior.

It is the latest impressive performance for Van Driel, who finished in second place at the Belgian Knockout last month, a career-best performance on the European Tour.

‘’Six birdies in a row is always a nice way to start! I hit it close on all the opening six holes, so it wasn’t too hard to tap them in, but you have still got to make the putts,’’ he said.

‘’I was eight under par through 11 holes and I was thinking to myself that there’s a couple more birdie opportunities out there, but as soon as you do that you lose your momentum.

‘’I have been playing on the European Tour for the past three weeks and compared to Valderrama the course feels pretty wide. Nonetheless, it’s a course where you get rewarded for hitting straight shots and I was able to do that today, so overall really happy with my performance.’’

Meanwhile, Senior continued the good form that saw him seal his spot in The Open Championship field by progressing through Final Qualifying at St Annes Old Links on Tuesday, firing an opening round of 66, six under par, to lie two shots off the lead in Slovakia.

It was a quick turn around for the Englishman, who played 36-holes in Final Qualifying on Tuesday, before catching a plane to Slovakia only 24 hours before his opening round. Despite a delayed flight preventing the 2015 Scottish Hydro Challenge champion from playing the course prior to teeing it up on Thursday, he played flawless golf on day one, carding two birdies and two eagles on his way to a bogey-free opening round.

A group of eight players sit three shots behind Van Driel in tied fourth on five under par, which includes 2019 Hauts de France Pas de Calais Golf Open champion Robin Roussel.

Van Driel will begin his second round tomorrow at 1:40pm local time, with Senior getting his round underway at 7:40am and Del Val set for 2:10pm.
