Sebastian Cappelen and Keegan Bradley each shot a six-under 66 to finish the first round of the Farmers Insurance Open atop the leader board.

The American Bradley was in-form early with back-to-back birdies on his opening two holes on the back nine, and carding an eagle on the par-five fifth.

Meanwhile Cappelen, a rookie from Denmark, was consistent from the first tee as he claimed six birdies on the difficult south course at Torrey Pines.

The pair sit one shot in front of an eight-strong contingent that includes former world number one Rory McIlroy, who could return to the top spot with a win this weekend.

Tiger Woods put together his lowest opening round in nine years to finish the day with a three-under 69.

It was the first time he broke 70 in the first round of the year since a 69 at Torrey in 2011.
