Jack Singh Brar posted a career-best round of 63 on Day One of the Foshan Open to top the leaderboard on nine under par.

On a day of low scoring at Foshan Golf Club, the Englishman leads by two at the end of the first day with Nico Geyger, Oscar Lengden, Dimitrios Papadatos and Callum Tarren all signing for rounds of 65.

It was Lengden and Tarren, playing in the morning groups, who set the early pace as the leaderboard was littered with red, before Singh Brar began making a move.

He birdied the first hole of the day, went five under on a four hole stretch, and then capped off an exceptional front nine with another gain on the ninth to make the turn on seven under par.

Another two birdies followed on the back nine as Singh Brar, already a winner this season, recorded his lowest-ever round.

“That’s the best round I’ve ever shot,” he said. “63, nine under – even I didn’t think I could do that but I’m chuffed with the result.

“I hit it really well today, I don’t think I missed a green actually. I had a few close chances which I converted as I was seven under through nine and then I tried to build on that.

“It’s quite easy to try and hold back but I knew there would be someone chasing me down at some point so those shots are going to be valuable.

“I think the type of course suits me here. I basically just didn’t hit it long enough last week, whereas here a lot of boys are playing back while I just hit driver.

“I was actually further up than some of the guys here and on the fairway, which is an advantage. It just suited me a bit more, this golf course.”

The Road to Ras Al Khaimah Number Ten admitted to taking a conservative approach in the closing holes, rather than pushing to make his total even lower.

“I missed a couple from about 15 feet but it was hard to keep pushing,” he said. “I was hitting shots to the middle of the green in some of the spots but I think that was probably the best I could have shot out there.

“If you do make a mess of it, you’re frustrated and think you should have just taken the par so you’ve got to obviously choose your moments and be aggressive where you can.”

Both Geyger and Papadatos were one shot behind Singh Brar going into the final hole, but after the duo both carded bogeys they were forced to settle for ending the day two shots back.

Behind the quartet in tied second are Eirik Tage Johansen, David Law, Philipp Mejow and Sebastian Soderberg on six under par. A shot further back on five under par are a group of seven players, including four Chinese, who are currently the highest placed China natives.
