Lane leaning on fond experiences at Scottish Senior Open

Winner of the Scottish Open 30 years ago, 1993 Ryder Cup player Barry Lane will rekindle fond memories as he prepares to tee it up at this week’s Scottish Senior Open at Craigielaw Golf Club.

Lane won the first of five European Tour titles at Gleneagles aged 28, finishing three strokes clear of fellow Ryder Cup veterans Sandy Lyle and José Rivero.Now, 30 years on, he will go in search of his third Scottish Senior Open title after successfully winning and then defending the trophy in 2010 and 2011.
“I really like this sort of golf,” said Lane. “All my life, all I wanted was to win a tournament. The Scottish Open is special to me, and this part of the world is very special.
“It was fantastic coming back to Scotland when I turned 50 and winning back-to-back Scottish Senior Opens at Fairmont St Andrews. I finished four under par the first year and then 14 under par the following year, it shows how much conditions can change up here.”
Celebrating its 26th anniversary this year, the Scottish Senior Open is being played at Craigielaw on Scotland’s Golf Coast, for the first time.
“The golf course looks great,” added Lane. “The weather will make it difficult this weekend. It’s a typical links golf course and some of the greens are elevated, so it’ll be tough to keep the ball on there.
“It’ll be a really good test. You just have to try and find the middle of the greens and make a few putts.”
Lane is one 14 Ryder Cup players in the field, with 1991 Masters Tournament winner and 2006 European Captain Ian Woosnam and 1989 European Tour Number One Ronan Rafferty also teeing it up.
Flying the Saltire are Gordan Brand Jnr, Ross Drummond, Stephen McAllister, Andrew Oldcorn and Gary Orr, who is one of the in-form golfers on the Staysure Tour having finished fourth and tied for second in his last two appearances.
