In 1870, 'Young' Tom Morris made the Championship Belt his property when he won it for the third successive time. With no trophy in 1871, there was no Championship. 'The Golf Champion Trophy', better known as the Claret Jug, was first offered in 1872, and won again by Young Tom, and has been played for ever since. |
