The Solheim Cup The ladies' equivalent of the Ryder Cup, the Solheim Cup was first played in 1990, the brainchild of Karsten Solheim, the Norwegian-American inventor of the Ping brand of putter and golf clubs. Although the format has varied, it is now identical to the Ryder Cup and, since 2003, has been played biennially in odd numbered years, against the even years of the mens' equivalent.
