Jason Dufner scored an even par 70 to take fifth place.

``The golf course, it was hard,`` said Johnson .``You had to play good golf if you wanted to shoot a good score. I felt like I did a good job today.``

Tiger Woods played 8-over par 78 after a triple bogey and two double bogeys.

``It's tough out there. But, I mean, shouldn't make two doubles and a triple, four-putt,`` said Woods.

``For most of the day I just didn't putt well.``

Phil Mickelson arrived at Shinnecock hoping for a win to complete the career Grand Slam and played a seven-over 77.

He started his day with a bogey at the 10th hole and continued with six bogeys before his single birdie of the day at the par-five fifth was followed by a further two bogeys.

Mickelson still managed to play better than playing partners Rory McIltory and Jordan Spieth. McIlroy finished his round 10-over par 80, which ties his highest score in a major, after playing seven bogeys and three double bogeys.

Spieth triple bogeyed his second hole then had five more bogeys and a double bogey for a 78.

``There were certainly some dicey pins, but at the same time there was guys that shot under par,`` Spieth said. ``So I could have played better.``

``What's tough about the wind here is that it's crosswinds,`` said Piercy. ``It's hard to pick your lines. You're trying to putt with the ball wiggling. So there's a lot of stuff that is difficult.``
