Matt Kuchar and his 13-year-old son, Cameron, birdied ten of their first eleven holes on their way to a 14-under 58 to take the lead of the PNC Championship on Saturday.

“As a father you look forward to seeing how your son is going to cope in certain situations and it's fun to see how they respond," said Kuchar. "The day could not have gone better, Cameron played some spectacular golf and it was a blast for me to sit back and watch.

"Whatever happens tomorrow, it's an amazing experience. What a cool thing to be able to share with people you care about.”

Making his sixth start in the PNC Championship, Greg Norman and son, Greg, Jr., made nine birdies and an eagle at the par-5 fifth en route to an 11-under 61. His best finishes in five previous starts were a pair of T6s in 2006 and 2007

Playing the tournament for the first time Tiger Woods and his 11-year-old son Charlie lie four shots back in a six-way tie for sixth place after shooting a bogey-free 10-under 62.

Charlie was on great form, he made eagle on the par-5 fifth hole on his own ball and Tiger didn't feel the need to tee off on the 13th, 14th and 18th with Charlie's shots being optimal already.

“I knew he was going to wow a lot of people,” said Justin Thomas, playing with father and coach Mike, and also tied in sixth place.

“I've seen this all along," said Tiger. "Probably not a lot of people have, but a lot of the shots he's hit I've seen back home at the Medalist this entire year, this entire pandemic. He's hit these shots. The (nine-hole) junior events he's played in he's hit a lot of these. It's just a matter of stringing these out for three and a half hours, which is a totally different deal.”

“We had the best time, it couldn't have been a better environment – to have the entire Thomas family out there and being able to share these moments and the conversation we had out there was priceless.”

Asked if this was the most fun he had had playing golf all year, Woods replied: “Yes without a doubt!”

Partnering with his son, Daniel, 81-year-old Lee Trevino birdied their last two holes of the day to open with a 10-under 62 in his 23rd consecutive PNC Championship. He is the only player to have competed in the event each year since its 1995 inception.

Defending champion Bernhard Langer, playing with daughter, Jackie, opened with 9-under 63; last year's victory marked Team Langer's fourth PNC Championship title (2005-06 with son, Stefan and 2014, 2019 with son, Jason). He is seeking a record-tying fifth Championship win this week following Raymond Floyd.

Gary Player, making his sixth start in the event and the oldest competitor in this week's field at 85, opened with a 6-under 66 with his grandson, James.
