Oasis Golf Club
Palmer Course
5th Hole / 533 Yards / Par-5
Mesquite, Nevada, USA
Architect: Arnold Palmer / Ed Seay (1995)
The community of Mesquite, Nevada accelerated onto the scene as a golfing hotspot when Arnold Palmer and his lead designer Ed Seay created Oasis Golf Club.
Originally, the facility was 27 holes. An additional nine holes was later added.
The architecture takes advantage of the engaging terrain. The holes are situated on rolling land that eventually works into massive natural mounds that flank a few of the holes.
The par-5 5th is the first of these types of holes.
The hole commences 100 feet above the fairway below. The aforementioned mounds flank both sides and finding the fairway can present an intimidating opening tee shot.
The fairway width is 30 yards across but from the elevated vantage point can seem even narrower.
Wind patterns can also vary and the intensity of the velocity will clearly impact one’s play of the hole. For those lacking the needed control – even an iron off the tee may be the best option.
The hole is certainly reachable in two shots by strong players but it is critical to find the short grass because any stray shot that misses too far left or right will likely find an unplayable area.
The green is not overly large at 4,561 square feet. There are also a number of vexing subtle movements to be deciphered.
The Palmer Course is a great example of the style of play Arnold Palmer epitomized. The hole permits a bold play off the tee that The King favored, however, the reward can only be earned with execution that rises to the occasion.
