Cameron Young increases lead to five shots

Wyndham Championship R3

Cameron Young

Cameron Young started the day with a one-shot lead with three holes to play and completed his round for a 62. He went on to fire six birdies, four of them consecutively from the 3rd, as well as one bogey for a 65 and a five-shot lead at 20-under at the Wyndham Championship.

“Kind of sketchy off the first tee and recovered really well. Hit two nice shots on 2, just a really difficult hole location, and then four birdies in a row. No. 3 felt like a putt I should have made. No. 4 is just trying to two-putt, fell in the front lip. No. 5 feel like you should make birdie and then 6 is a bonus on top of those three. I mean, just played some really nice golf there for about an hour,” said the American.

“Had some opportunities on the back nine, too, just didn’t make as many putts. But kind of cruised along with hitting some average shots kind of through the middle of the round, and nice to finish up the way I did, made a nice putt on 17.”

Young seeks his first PGA Tour title in his 94th start at the age of 28. He has had seven runner-up finishes, the most on Tour without a win since 1983 (most recent: 2024 Valspar Championship).

“I’ve gotten beat a lot. I haven’t — I’ve played some good golf on Sunday in really all those cases,” he added.

“So that’s all I’m trying to do tomorrow. I’m starting in a nice spot, so I’m just looking to try to beat second place by as many as I can. That’s been my mindset from the first tee on Thursday and that’s what I’m going to try to do tomorrow.”

Young holds the 54-hole lead/co-lead for the first time on Tour. His 54-hole score of 190 marks his career best (previous: 197/2024 Travelers Championship/T9, 197/2022 The Genesis Invitational/T2). It also marks the best 54-hole scoring record at the Wyndham Championship (previous: 191/Carl Pettersson/2008/won).

With a win, Young would become the 1,000th unique winner on Tour and the 12th first-time winner this season.

Colombia’s Nico Echavarria made one bogey and carded a 64 to move into second place at 15-under.

American Chris Kirk made a double bogey at the par-4 2nd as well as one bogey and six birdies for a 67 and a share of third place a 12-under. He needs a solo 43rd finish or better for a chance to qualify for the FedExCup Playoffs. Kirk seeks his seventh PGA Tour title and first since the 2024 The Sentry.

Defending champion Aaron Rai of England looks to become the first player to successfully defend at the Wyndham Championship since Sam Snead in 1956. He fired a 69 comprised of five birdies and four bogeys for his share of third place.

American Mac Meissner made four bogeys and closed with a 70 to move down into third place. He seeks his first victory in his 51st start and needs a win for a chance to qualify for the FedExCup Playoffs. His best career finish on Tour was 4th at the 2024 Barracuda Championship.

Following the Wyndham Championship, the top 70 players in the FedExCup standings will qualify for next week’s FedEx St. Jude Championship (the first of three events in the FedExCup Playoffs):
• FedEx St. Jude Championship (top 70 players following Wyndham Championship)
• BMW Championship (top 50 players following FedEx St. Jude Championship)
• Tour Championship (top 30 players following BMW Championship)

91 players in the field have a chance to move inside the top 70 based on their finish this week.

The Wyndham Championship also serves as the final opportunity for players to secure their spot inside the Comcast Business Tour Top 10, which rewards season-long performance for the top 10 players in the FedExCup standings at the conclusion of the FedExCup Regular Season. The Comcast Business Tour TOP 10 will share a $40 million bonus, with the No. 1-ranked played earning $8 million.
