The FedEx St. Jude Championship is the first of the PGA Tour’s three playoff events that begins this week at TPC Southwind in Memphis.
Following the conclusion of the Wyndham Championship last week, where Cameron Young claimed his maiden tour victory, the top 70 players in the standings sealed their spot for the first playoff event.

Of course, this number will be whittled down to the top 50 ahead of the BMW Championship next week. The leading 30 players progress to the Tour Championship at East Lake for a chance to be crowned the FedEx Cup champion.
Rory McIlroy will be absent this week. The Northern Irishman is taking a rest as it he knows he has enough points to make it through to the BMW Championship next week.
Hideki Matsuyama was the victor here last year, prevailing over Xander Schauffele and Viktor Hovland by two shots.
Scottie Scheffler returns to competitive golf for the first time following his Open Championship triumph last month. The American currently leads the standings by over 1,000 points from McIlroy.
Course details: TPC Southwind
TPC Southwind in Memphis will play host for the third consecutive year, but the venue has been a mainstay on the PGA Tour since 1989, previously hosting the FedEx St. Jude Classic and the short-lived WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational.
The par-70, 7,244-yard course is as challenging as it gets on the PGA Tour. Water is in play on ten holes, while the 2004 remodeling of the course saw more trees planted, fairways re-contoured and over 200 yards added to the overall length.
The fifth hole, originally a par-5, was converted to a par-4 during the remodel, establishing the track as a par-70.
The Ron Prichard design has seen some low scores over the years in the various tour events held at the venue, including Dustin Johnson’s -19 to win the St. Jude Classic in 2018, proving that there are birdie chances there if the player is excellent tee-to-green.
The Field
Scheffler leads the field and across the top 70, only McIlroy is missing from this week.

The likes of Aaron Rai, Tony Finau, Nico Echavarria and Rickie Fowler will have plenty of work to do this week if they wish to make the top 50 for the BMW Championship.
All four players sit between 50-70 in the rankings and will need to make a move in Memphis.
Schauffele, Matt Fitzpatrick and Jordan Spieth are ranked between 40-50, meaning they to will need to finish high up the leaderboard to ensure a place at the second playoff event.
