Lee Westwood Set for Staysure Legends Tour Debut at Chart Hills

The former World Number One will join Major champions, Ryder Cup figures and established Tour winners for three days of tournament golf in Kent.

Lee Westwood

Lee Westwood will make his Staysure Legends Tour debut at the Staysure English Legends, held at Chart Hills Golf Club from 28–30 August.

Westwood, a 44-time professional winner, joins a field featuring Major champions and several familiar opponents from his long European career. He will make that debut in front of a home crowd at the Sir Nick Faldo-designed course in Kent.

Westwood said he was looking forward to returning to competition alongside players he has known for much of his career.

“I’m looking forward to playing the Staysure English Legends Tournament at Chart Hills and making my first appearance on the Staysure Legends Tour. There’ll be a lot of familiar faces there, guys I’ve played with and against for a long time, so it should be a good week.

“I’ve always enjoyed playing in front of a home crowd. The support you get in England is always great, so it’ll be nice to get out there at Chart Hills and hopefully give everyone something to enjoy.”

Westwood brings three decades of experience

Westwood first reached the top of the Official World Golf Ranking in 2010, ending Tiger Woods’ five-year spell as World Number One. He spent 22 weeks in that position.

The Englishman topped the European Tour’s season standings in 2000 and 2009 before winning the Race to Dubai in 2020. That third success came 20 years after he first finished a season as Europe’s leading player.

Although Westwood has not won a Major Championship, he finished runner-up on three occasions and recorded 19 top-ten finishes across the four Majors.

His Ryder Cup record also places him among Europe’s most experienced players. Westwood appeared in 11 matches between 1997 and 2021, collecting 24 points and contributing to seven victories. He also served as a vice-captain when Thomas Bjørn led Europe to victory in Paris in 2018.

Ryan Howsam, chairman of the Staysure Legends Tour, said Westwood’s debut would give English spectators another opportunity to watch one of the country’s leading players.

“To have him make his debut at the Staysure English Legends makes it even more special. It gives fans the opportunity to see one of England’s greatest players begin this next chapter on home soil, and we’re looking forward to welcoming him to Chart Hills.”

Major winners and Ryder Cup names join the field

Westwood will be joined by 2005 US Open champion Michael Campbell and former Ryder Cup captain Paul McGinley. Defending champion Steve Webster will return after winning the English Legends title in 2025.

The week begins on Thursday 27 August with a fourball match before the tournament Pro-Am. Campbell will partner former Premier League footballer and television personality Jimmy Bullard against McGinley and golf content creator Peter Finch.

The match begins at 8am, with free admission for spectators. Tournament play starts the following morning and continues through Sunday, with fans permitted to walk the fairways alongside the players.

Chart Hills prepares for tournament week

Chart Hills is a parkland course designed by six-time Major champion Faldo and ranked in Golf World’s latest list of England’s top 100 courses.

A multi-year investment programme has introduced The Loop, a six-hole par-three course also designed by Faldo. The club has added a 668-square-metre putting green, while the Championship course now features sandcapped fairways and 72 renovated tee boxes.

Its best-known holes include the par-five fifth, called The Anaconda, and the island-green par-three 17th. On-site accommodation is available at The Barn through the club’s stay-and-play packages.

Spectators will also have access to the Tournament Village, including a Destination Pavilion featuring golf destinations from across the Staysure Legends Tour schedule.
