Germany’s Freddy Schott started the day two shots behind the lead at the Bapco Energies Bahrain Championship and fired seven birdies, two bogeys and a double bogey at the par-4 11th for a 3-under 69 to reach 17-under and enter a playoff.

Scotland’s Calum Hill was leading after 54 holes but carded a 71 following two bogeys and a double bogey at the par-4 8th to join the tie at the top of the leaderboard alongside American Patrick Reed who made two bogeys for a 67.

Reed bogeyed the first extra hole leaving Schott and Hill to move on to the second. Hill went out of bounds then found the water and conceded before Schott had to putt for the win.

“I have no idea,” said Schott. “It’s just amazing, I’m just extremely happy, surprised… I don’t know what’s happening right now. I’m just so happy.

“I could have done it the regular way, that would have also been fine! But to do it this way feels even more special so I’m just glad it happened this way.”

Schott won his maiden DP World Tour title in his 91st start on Tour.

“I think the difference this week sits back a bit further, when I secured my full card in India last year with Taka on the bag as well, where I just felt like, ‘Okay, well, now I belong. Now I’ve arrived’.

“This made the biggest change, mind change, for me over the last few weeks as well.”

Spain’s Sergio Garcia fired seven birdies, one bogey and a double bogey at the par-5 14th to close with a 68 and a share of fourth place at 16-under alongside New Zealand’s Daniel Hillier who signed for a bogey-free 66.
