2018 champion Keegan Bradley opened with a bogey-free 66 to take his 11th 18-hole lead/co-lead in stroke-play events on the PGA Tour at the BMW Championship, the second of three FedExCup Playoffs Events.
The American, who will captain the US team at the next Ryder Cup, has won seven times on Tour so far in 351 starts, most recently at the 2023 Travelers Championship. and started the week No. 50 in the FedExCup standings, receiving the final spot in this week’s 50-player field.
“Sunday afternoon was one of the toughest afternoons of my PGA TOUR career. It was really brutal. It’s such a relief to be here,” said Bradley.
“I just felt a lot calmer today. But I played really, really well.
“The top 50 is one of our most important numbers for us as players to be playing in these big tournaments and FedExCup points. I want to be out there with the guys and the Ryder Cup team. I want to be playing with them, on the range with them, in the locker room, in the tournament. It was really important for me to be in this top 50.
Last week’s FedEx St. Jude Championship winner Hideki Matsuyama of Japan stood 5-under through 17 holes at the time of the delay due to severe afternoon thunderstorms. He returned to hit his approach shot to two feet, but missed the birdie putt to remain one shot off the lead in second place at 5-under. He is currently No. 3 in the FedExCup and will advance to the Tour Championship for the 10th time in 11 seasons.
Four players are tied in third place at 4-under, South Korea’s Sungjae Im, Sweden’s Alex Noren, Australia’s Adam Scott and Canada’s Corey Conners.
