Robert MacIntyre poised for wire-to-wire victory

BMW Championship R3

Robert MacIntyre could make history with a win at the Amgen Irish Open

Robert MacIntyre fired two birdies and one bogey at the BMW Championship before a final-hole birdie putt from 41 feet, 3 inches to card a 2-under 68, reach 16-under and set his career low 54-hole score on the PGA Tour, one stroke shy of the tournament-record 193. He leads the field in Strokes Gained: Putting (7.818).

This marks the Scot’s second 54-hole lead/co-lead in stroke-play events on Tour (2024 RBC Canadian Open/Won). He seeks his third win in his 76th start (2024 RBC Canadian Open, 2024 Genesis Scottish Open). He has had five top-10 finishes in 21 starts this season, led by a runner-up finish at the US Open.

“The day was tough. As you would have seen, it wasn’t the plain sailing of the first two days, but yeah, I thought I managed it well. Missed it in the right spots. A couple of times I didn’t miss it in the right spots. But yeah, it was steady. Holed some nice par putts, missed a couple of chances that I felt I could have got,” said MacIntyre.

“But the pins were absolutely brutal. You want to be underneath the holes, and where they cut the pins today you just couldn’t get underneath them and you were standing there with 15 feet coming down a steep slope, a lot of time a lot of break.

“Even the first hole, put a bunker shot to 15 feet and you’re left with 4 on AimPoint, which from 15 feet you’re aiming a good three, three and a half feet outside the hole from 15 feet. So there was massive slope.

“I thought I done a good job.”

MacIntyre has a chance to become the first wire-to-wire winner of the BMW Championship since Marc Leishman (2017) and second wire-to-wire winner this season (Scottie Scheffler/The CJ Cup Byron Nelson).

In second place at 12-under lies American reigning FedExCup champion and current points leader Scottie Scheffler who made four birdies and one bogey for a 67. His third-round 67 marks his 16th consecutive round under par (last round over par: R3/2025 Travelers Championship/72/+2).

2024 BMW Championship runner-up Ludvig Åberg of Sweden fired four birdies and two bogeys and lies in third place at 10-under.

Fellow 2024 BMW Championship runner-up Sam Burns of the USA and England’s Harry Hall both made two bogeys and closed with a 67 for a share of fourth place at 8-under.

The top 30 players at the conclusion of the BMW Championship will advance to the Tour Championship.
