David Micheluzzi closed with back-to-back birdies to take a one-shot lead at the the BMW International Open at Golfclub München Eichenried.
The 27-year-old was the 2023 PGA Tour of Australasia Order of Merit winner but has not had the best start to his DP World Tour career so far making just five of his eleven cuts this season with two top-10s including one at last week's Italian Open.
"Absolutely terrible," said the Australian. "I think last week was my fifth cut made this season so I'm just trying to find my feet out here a little bit.
"Now everything is starting to feel a little bit more comfortable and I've just got to do what I do best and that's play good golf.
"I got here from playing good golf in Australia and I've just got to keep doing that."
Micheluzzi made seven birdies and a single bogey at the par-3 4th to close with a 6-under 66 on Thursday.
"It was kind of all over the shop to be honest," he said of his opening round. "It was a little bit wayward with the swing early and the putter and short game was elite today.
"On the back nine I gave myself some chances. I know I'm putting it really well at the moment."
South African Casey Jarvis shot a bogey-free 67 for a share of second place at 5-under alongside American Patrick Reed, Scot Ewen Ferguson and Englishman Frank Kennedy.
Bernhard Langer made two birdies and a bogey to close with a 71 and a share of 54th pplace at 1-under
