Hideki Matsuyama started the day four-shots behind the lead and fired eagles at the par-5s 4th and 17th as well as five birdies and one bogey for an 8-under 64. He leads by one shot at 12-under at the BMW PGA Championship.
“This is my first time playing Wentworth,” said the Japanese player. “I wasn’t expecting I would play this good. So very happy with the round today.
“It’s obviously a very challenging golf course. You know, I’m just trying to focus on my game, trying to do the same thing for tomorrow and the weekend. So looking forward to the weekend.
“I would love to achieve something big right here, but obviously the conditions are going to be changing for the weekend, so hopefully I can adjust to that and looking forward to the weekend.”
Trailing Matsuyama at 11-under are England’s Justin Rose who made two bogeys and closed with a 66, Sweden’s Ludvig Åberg who share the overnight lead also made two bogeys and carded a 69 and finally Norway’s Viktor Hovland whose 66 featured an eagle at the par-5 18th.

Spain’s Pablo Larrazábal fired seven birdies and two bogeys to close with a 67 and takes solo fifth place at 10-under into the weekend at Wentworth Club.
Overnight co-leader Tom Vaillant of France made six bogeys and closed with a 75. He lies in T22 at 5-under.
Road to Dubai Rankings leader Rory McIlroy of Northern Ireland fired five birdies, three consecutive bogeys from the 4th and a double bogey at the par-5 18th to close with a 72 and a share of 44th place at 3-under.
England’s Tommy Fleetwood closed birdie-par-birdie for a 69. He lies in T61 at 2-under and just made the cut. He has not missed a cut on the DP World Tour since the 2018 HNA Open de France.
Following the weather disruption on Thursday play was once again suspended overnight due to darkness.
Round 2 will resume at 0700 local time on Saturday. Round 3 will be a one tee start in 3 balls and will not start before 0800 local time.
