Adam Schenk signed for a bogey-free, 4-under 67 to reach 12-under and take a share of the lead at the Butterfield Bermuda Championship.
“A great opportunity to have for tomorrow,” said the American. “I know if I don’t, I have to go to Q-School if I don’t get inside the top 100, so that’s a pretty big motivator and what a great opportunity to have tomorrow.
“I’ve been playing a lot better golf. I’ve been working pretty darn hard at it the last four months — well, the last two years, but not a lot of results. But kind of found something about two or three months ago. After Wyndham I started to make a few changes and really started to see some improvements after that.
“I wish I really could have done this earlier in the season because I wouldn’t be in this position, but here we are. And if I can make some putts tomorrow, it’s hard to do in the wind, maybe play another bogey-free round, that’d be awesome, that puts me in a really good spot.”
Schenk has finished runner-up twice on the PGA Tour but is still seeking his first win in his 243rd start.
He holds the 54-hole lead/co-lead for the fifth time on Tour, most recently at the 2023 Charles Schwab Challenge where he lost a playoff to Emiliano Grillo.
American Braden Thornberry eagled the par-5 17th and made three bogeys to close with a 69 and take a share of the lead.
“I’m super excited. It’s a battle out there. There’s kind of some shots that are — you feel are impossible, you’re trying to get past and every once in a while you’ll catch a wedge shot that’s downwind a little bit and you feel like you have to take advantage of those. It feels like not every shot’s hard, but then there’s some, like 16 was a hurricane basically when we hit it. It was 124, tried to chip a 6-iron, wind changed. You get some shots like that that you have to accept are not going to end up near the hole even if you make a decent swing. Just try to battle it out, that’s really just the key to it all.”
He holds the 54-hole lead/co-lead for the first time, his previous best 54-hole position was T10 at the 2018 FedEx St. Jude Classic (finished T26).
The PGA Tour rookie has recorded two top-25 finishes in 24 starts this season. His lone PGA Tour-sanctioned title came at the 2024 Korn Ferry Tour Championship, securing his PGA Tour card for this season.
Overnight leader Adam Hadwin of Canada made four birdies and four bogeys for a 71 and moved down into a share of third place at 11-under alongside Americans Max McGreevy and Chandler Phillips as well as Japan’s Takumi Kanaya.
Eight-time Japan Golf Tour winner Kanaya is one of four players who went bogey free in round three (Chan Kim, Adam Schenk, Chandler Phillips). He has had five top 10s in 52 starts on Tour, including three this season (T5/CJ Cup Byron Nelson, T7/3M Open, T4/Baycurrent Classic). He is one of three players from Japan at 7-under or better who combine for 17 total victories on the Japan Golf Tour (7th/Rikuya Hoshino/6 wins, T13/Ryo Hisatsune/3 wins).
Due to forecasted high winds, final round tee times will be 7:15AM – 9:16AM from Nos. 1 and 10 tees.
FedExCup Fall Notes
The 2025 Butterfield Bermuda Championship is the sixth event of the FedExCup Fall, a group of seven tournaments played after the Tour Championship that finalizes eligibility for the 2026 PGA Tour Season.
Winners of events during the FedExCup Fall receive the similar benefits of winners of Full-Field Events during the Regular Season, including 500 FedExCup points, Official World Golf Ranking points, a two-year PGA Tour exemption (exempt thru 2026) and invitations to The Sentry, the Players Championship and PGA Championship.
The Aon Next 10 is an eligibility pathway that awards access into Signature Events (outside of The Sentry), recognizing the top 10 players, not otherwise exempt, from the FedExCup standings; Nos. 51-60 in the final FedExCup Fall standings at the conclusion of The RSM Classic will serve as the Aon Next 10 for the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am and The Genesis Invitational.
