World No. 1 Justin Rose shot a three-under par 69 to win the Farmers Insurance Open by two strokes on Sunday..

England's Rose captured his 10th US PGA Tour title as he held off Adam Scott down the stretch and secured the victory with a 21-under par total of 267.

Australia's Scott closed with four straight birdies in his four-under par 68 on the Torrey Pines South Course in La Jolla, California.

"I haven't won in January since about 2002, so this feels great," said the 2013 US Open champion Rose.

The 38-year-old Rose, leading by three to start the day, got off to a rough and tumble start with three bogeys in his first five holes, but got back on track with a birdie on the par-four seventh.

He made back-to-back birdies around the turn and then held on for the win with his sixth and final birdie of the day on 18.

Rose, who surpassed $50 million in PGA Tour earnings, said he is relieved to see that changes he made in his equipment and his game are paying off.

"I am really happy. I challenged the status quo and changed everything up in the search to try and get better," said Rose, who switched to a different brand of clubs at the end of last year.

"I felt comfortable with the way I drove the ball this week on a tough test.

"A whole new look for me. But I don't mind it, if it is going to produce this golf."

This is Rose's first win since the Turkish Airlines Open on the European Tour in November. He came into the event after finishing in a tie for 34th at the Desert Classic in La Quinta, California.

He also won with new caddie Gareth Lord on his bag for just the second time. Rose's regular caddie Mark Fulcher is recovering from heart surgery.

"He's the number one player in the world, and he's showing why," Scott said. "Even when he was a little off, he kept it together."

Japan's Hideki Matsuyama tied for third with Talor Gooch at 16-under 272 after firing a five-under 67. American Gooch shot a 68.

First-round leader Jon Rahm , four time major winner Rory McIlroy and defending champ Jason Day finished in a three-way tie for fifth, seven strokes back of Rose. Day shot 67, McIlroy had 69, while Rahm closed with a 72.

McIlroy surged into contention with three birdies in four holes on the front nine but failed to keep pace on the back.

Tiger Woods made his 2019 debut and his tournament was almost a mirror image of how he performed last year -- when the tournament marked his return to the tour in the wake of spinal fusion surgery.

Woods narrowly made the cut, but surged on the final day with five birdies in his final eight holes to get into the top 20.

Woods shot a five-under 67, including a 31 on his back nine, to finish in tie for 20th with four others at 10-under 278. He tied for 23rd last year.

Woods said things are different this year as he has a better understanding of his fitness and focus.

"Well it was nice to shake off some rust," the 14-time major winner said.

This was Woods' first official tournament since winning the Tour Championship last year.

"Each day I got a little better, which is nice" he added. "I was a little bit sharper each and every day.

"My driver started coming around which is nice. My iron game wasn't quite as sharp. I've been hitting good putts and finally they started going in."

His next event will be in a couple of weeks at the Genesis Open in his hometown of Los Angeles.

Woods says he no longer has to worry about what stage his game is at when he returns from a long break.

"I am at a place where I can take time off and know what I am going to have when I come back. (Before) I am often looking and searching for something," he said.

Round 3: Rose holds on to lead after 36 holes

World number one Justin Rose recovered from two double bogeys to card a three-under par 69 and maintain a three-shot lead in the US PGA Farmers Insurance Open.

He produced six birdies and an eagle on the South Course at Torrey Pines to maintain his grip on the tournament with an 18-under par total of 198.

"I'm playing well and just need to keep producing," said Rose, whose 20 birdies this week are the most in the field. "It would be a great way to start 2019.โ€

Rose was three strokes clear of Australian Adam Scott , who had seven birdies and an eagle in his five-under par 65 for a 15-under total of 201.

First-round leader Jon Rahm of Spain was alone in third on 202 after a four-under 68. American Doug Ghim followed on 203 and Talor Gooch on 204, with Rory McIlroy and Hideki Matsuyama heading a group of five players on 205 -- McIlroy after a 69 and Matsuyama, who started the day in second place, with a one-over par 73.

Rose led by as many as six strokes, but his second double bogey of the day, at the par-four 14th, trimmed the lead and he closed with a bogey at the par-five 18th, where his second shot from the left rough found the water.

Even with the mis-steps, Rose tied the 54-hole tournament record at 18-under.

Scott's 65 was the low round of the day and put him within striking distance in his first appearance at Torrey Pines since the 2008 US Open.

"It's a tough golf course, but if you ball strike it you can actually shoot a good score," said Scott, the 2013 Masters champion.

Rahm, the 2017 winner who opened the week with a sparkling 62, said he'll need something similar to have a shot on Sunday.

"You're definitely going to need something in the 60s to have a chance," the Spaniard said.

Tiger Woods , whose eight wins at Torrey Pines include the most recent of his 14 major titles at the 2008 US Open, is just looking to leave on a high note, having failed to gain any ground with a one-under par 71 that left him 13 off the pace.

Woods said he drove it well, but needed to improve his iron play and get some putts to drop to make his goal of reaching double-digits under par on Sunday, which would give him "something positive" to take into the rest of 2019.

"I've got to play a little bit better than I have," said Woods, who added that he needs to "drive it like I did today and hit my irons a little bit better and give myself plenty of looks.

"It's frustrating," Woods said, "because I'm hitting a lot of good putts and they're just not going in."

Round: 2 Justin Rose seizes lead with 66

World number one Justin Rose fired seven birdies in a six-under par 66 on Friday to seize a three-shot lead over Hideki Matsuyama in the US PGA Tour's Farmers Insurance Open.

Rose equalled the 36-hole tournament record with a two round 15-under par total of 129. Japan's Matsuyama was alone in second after a six-under par 66 for 132.

Overnight leader Jon Rahm of Spain headed a trio sharing third place on 134, while 14-time major winner Tiger Woods found himself 11 adrift after a sometimes frustrating two-under par 70.

Rose started the day one shot behind Rahm and got going with three birdies in a row at the fourth, fifth and sixth on the South Course, one of two in use over the first two days of the tournament

After his lone bogey of the day at the seventh Rose saw a birdie try at eight lip out, but he moved to the lead at 12-under with a two-putt birdie at the par-five ninth, then rolled in a two-footer for a birdie at the 10th.

Rose birdied the par-five 13th and rolled in a 24-footer for birdie at 16 to pad his lead.

"The job was done today," said Rose, who has hit 16 of 18 greens in regulation in each of the first two rounds. "It's really nice to go out there and place a positive round and feel good on it. I can build on it hopefully on the weekend."

American Billy Horschel , who raced into contention with five birdies in the space of six holes on the front nine, saw his challenge fade with three bogeys on the back nine on the way to a four-under par 68.

That left him tied with Ryan Palmer (67) and Rahm, who had two birdies and two bogeys in his even par round on the South Course -- a far cry from his sparkling 62 on Thursday.

Matsuyama's six-under effort on the South Course included an eagle from off the green at the par-five sixth.

He teed off on 10 and made the last of his five birdies at the par-three eighth.

Northern Ireland's world number eight Rory McIlroy, playing the event for the first time, climbed the leaderboard with a seven-under par 65 on the North Course, where he rolled in an eagle putt at his first hole, the 10th, and holed out for an eagle at the at 16.

McIlroy added four birdies with just one bogey for an eight-under par total of 136 that left him tied for ninth.

"All in all a good round of golf," McIlroy said. "At least I have a good shot going into the weekend."

Woods couldn't say the same. Needing to go low after an opening 70 on the South Course, Woods settled for the same on the North.

"I just couldn't get a putt to fall," said Woods, although he added that the problem wasn't poor putting.

"A lot of lip-outs today and a round that could easily have been five- or six-under par just didn't materialize."

Woods was even for the day through his first nine holes after a double-bogey at the 18th -- where he was plugged in a bunker -- offset two earlier birdies.

That left him flirting with the cut line before back-to-back birdies at the third and fourth, the second courtesy of a chip-in. But Woods wouldn't find another birdie the rest of the way, unable to take advantage of a superb drive at the fifth and watching his chip at the sixth hit the stick and bounce away.

"It's going to have to be a low and special weekend to have a chance," said Woods, whose eight victories at Torrey Pines include seven Farmers Insurance Open titles and a memorable 2008 US Open triumph -- the most recent of his 14 major titles.

Round 1: Jon Rahm takes early lead with 62

Jon Rahm started his round with two eagles on his front nine in a 10-under 62 Thursday to take a one-shot lead at the Farmers Insurance Open.

Spain's Rahm, whose first win on the US PGA Tour came at this event two years ago, is one stroke ahead of world number one Justin Rose and American Doug Ghim, who both shot nine-under 63s.

"There's a lot of happiness going on in this area for me, so I just feel I'm going to play good when I tee up," Rahm said.

Fourteen time major winner Tiger Woods, making his 2019 debut, birdied his last hole of the day to post a 70 and is eight shots back of Rahm at the Torrey Pines Golf Course in La Jolla, California.

Taiwan's C.T. Pan is fourth after shooting a 64 and Jordan Spieth is alone in fifth with a seven-under 65.

The 24-year-old Rahm came into the event as one of the hottest players on the tour and his start reflected that as he eagled both par-fives on his front nine, including the opening hole.

Rahm, who began on the 10th tee on the North Course, sailed his approach to inside of 10 feet from the flag and then rolled in the putt for an eagle.

The world number seven also eagled the par-five 17th. He finished with seven birdies and one bogey which came on his back nine.

Rahm's last win came in the Hero World Challenge in the Bahamas in December. He has four straight top-10 finishes.

He is the youngest champion in tournament history, winning at age 22 and two months.

"This is probably my favourite area," Rahm said. "If you take into account the town and the vibe around Torrey Pines, this is my favourite golf course and golf tournament."

Rose, who won the Turkish Airlines Open on the European Tour in November, is coming off a tie for 34th at last week's Desert Classic near Palm Springs.

Rose shot a bogey-free 63 that included an eagle and seven birdies. Like Rahm he began with an opening eagle on the par-five 10th.

Woods, who is playing his first official tournament since winning last year's Tour Championship, finished with five birdies, three bogeys and 10 pars for a share of 53rd place. He played on the South Course which is the more difficult of the two.

"A couple under par on the South Course is not something to sneeze at, but now I have to shoot a low one tomorrow," said Woods, who hit half his fairways and made one 29 foot putt on the 13th hole.

"I felt pretty comfortable with everything today," Woods said. "I felt like I drove it halfway decent and irons were good.

"Playing at competitive speed again, I didn't quite hit all my irons pin high like I normally do. That's something hopefully I'll have a better handle on tomorrow.

"It was nice to have some juice flow in the system again, it's been a while."

He has won this event seven times, but not since 2013. Woods also captured the last of his 14 majors at the US Open on this course in 2008.

World number eight Rory McIlroy fired a one-under 71 in his Torrey Pines debut and defending champion Jason Day of Australia shot five-under 67 and is tied for 15th.
