Jordan Gumberg started the day with a one shot lead and fired seven birdies and one bogey for a 6-under 66 at the Vintage Course to reach 14-under and increase his lead by one shot at the Hainan Classic.

“I just picked up shots here and there as it goes,” said the American.

“I don’t feel like I’ve done anything crazy, I don’t feel like I’m stuffing pins to two feet on every hole, I just kind of kept plugging away – pick up a shot here, pick up a shot there kind of thing.

“My putter is still rolling, which is nice. I left a few out there today for sure on the greens, I had a few five-footers that didn’t go in, but that’s golf, they’re not all going to go in.

“Just keep it going and stay within yourself – all the clichés really. They’re cliché but they are useful. We’re playing good golf – take that confidence into the weekend, knowing that you’re playing good golf, and just kind of back yourself.”

Jorge Campillo, playing the Blackstone Course, made seven birdies and two bogeys for a 67 and stayed in second place at 12-under.

“I made a few silly bogeys but I played great in the front nine, which was my back nine, and I made some great putts as well to finish, so it was nice,” said the Spaniard.

“I think the Vintage Course plays a couple of shots easier than this one so I guess it was a similar score, seven under that round and five under here.”

South Africans Thriston Lawrence (Vintage/bogey-free) and Dylan Frittelli (Blackstone/one bogey) both carded 68 and are tied in third place at 10-under one ahead of South Korean Taehoon Ok who made two bogeys at the Vintage Course for a 68.
