LIV Golf Mexico City 2025: Everything you need to know

Mexico City plays host to the sixth event of the 2025 LIV Golf season this week

LIV Golf Mexico City is the sixth event of the 2025 season and comes just two weeks after the Masters.

12 LIV Golfers competed at Augusta National with the highlights being Patrick Reed’s impressive third place finish. Bryson DeChambeau looked like he could derail Rory McIlroy’s chances of claiming the career Grand Slam, but ultimately finished in a tie for fifth.

Joaquin Niemann is sitting pretty atop of the induvial standings, leading the way by six points, although Sergio Garcia and Jon Rahm – who both failed to challenge at the Masters – are hot on his tail.

Fireballs GC lead the team standings by a whopping 14 points after five events. The Garcia-led quartet won three events in a row and another solid showing in Mexico City will increase their advantage.

An event in Mexico was added ahead of the 2023 season, with Mayakoba hosting, following suit in 2024. These tournaments were won by Charles Howell III and Niemann.

There will be a change of scenery this week as Mexico City welcomes all 54 players. With a population of nearly 23m, the city becomes the largest to ever host a LIV Golf League event.

Designed by brothers Willie and Alex Smith – two former U.S. Open winners – the course was opened in 1921 and was further renovated in Percy Clifford in 1972.

Host of the Mexico Open 18 times between 1944 and 2014 along with playing host to the WGC-Mexico Championship between 2017 and 2020, the course knows what it takes to host a prime event.

The parkland course sits around 7,800 feet above sea level which could play havoc with distance control this week, as the ball will travel further in the thinner air. The longer hitters will certainly thrive.

The event will play to a par-71 this week as the 529-yard ninth hole will play as a par-four rather than a par-five, making it more difficult.

“The biggest challenge is the altitude and getting the distance control down,” Mickelson said. “Once you have that, you can really appreciate how beautiful the golf course is and the area around it.”

Will the change in venue prove popular among the players? Only time will tell.

LIV Golf Mexico City 2025: Format and prize fund

LIV Golf Mexico City will be played over 54 holes across three days, with a shotgun start each day and no cut.

Every player in a team competes in two competitions simultaneously – individual and team – with each stroke counting in the individual event, whereas only the combined scores of the team’s top three players count for the opening two rounds.

All four scores count in the final round of each event.

There is a $25m prize fund on offer. $20m is assigned to the individual competition, with $5m going towards the team event.

The winner will take home a $4m share, with last place earning $50,000. In the team event, £3m goes to the winning foursome as the second and third place finishers win $1.5m and $500,000 respectively.
