The globally acclaimed Monte Rei Golf and Country Club is set to undergo a six month period of renovation to upgrade facilities and further elevate the experience at one of Portugal’s most iconic golf destinations.

Following a detailed assessment of its signature North Course, DETAILS (Monte Rei’s new management company) has unveiled intentions for fresh investment in the renowned European golfing hotspot. These plans aim to preserve the Algarve resort’s reputation for quality, sustainability and resilience for the long-term future.

Nuno Sepulveda, co-CEO at DETAILS, said:

“Monte Rei is already one of the finest golf courses in Portugal and Europe and that is something we deeply respect. This project is about taking a long-term view – protecting the character and playing qualities that members and guests value, while making thoughtful improvements that will allow the course to thrive for decades to come.”

Monte Rei North Course: Location, Design and Background

Located in the rolling hills of the Eastern Algarve, the Club’s highly regarded course opened in 2007 and was designed by 18-time major winner Jack Nicklaus. The wider 1,000-acre property also features a selection of villas and apartments, along with dining options, concierge services, a swimming pool, tennis courts and family areas.

Nicklaus’ demanding layout and scenic views have provided a memorable setting for golfers from around the world, who will now see the course close from April to September this year whilst the redevelopment is carried out.

Monte Rei Renovation Plans: Course and Infrastructure Upgrades

Throughout this period, work will include landscaping restoration and upgrades to the irrigation system and pump station to improve water efficiency. Selective course enhancements will also take place, including the reconstruction of greens, bunker upgrades and refurbishment of cart paths.

Further improvements are planned for the resort’s practice amenities, including upgrades to the driving range and training technology. The programme will also introduce quieter, more environmentally responsible maintenance operations supported by modern machinery.

Nuno Sepulveda added:

“As the management company, we are ensuring that Portugal’s leading golf venues, particularly heritage courses like Monte Rei, are preserved and enhanced through careful considered evolution, without altering their essence unnecessarily. When Monte Rei reopens, it will be stronger, more resilient, and better equipped for the future, while remaining unmistakably Monte Rei.”
