Matt Wallace started the day with a four-shot lead at Crans-sur-Sierre Golf Club and produced just two birdies as well as two bogeys to close with a 70 and reach 11-under at the Omega European Masters.
Wallace’s Spanish playing partner Alfredo Garcia-Heredia also reached 11-under having made six birdies and two bogeys for a 66 setting up a playoff.
Both players found the fairway at the first extra hole and landed on the green with their second shots, but while Garcia-Heredia’s putt went left of the cup, Wallace’s eight footer went in for the win.
“Knackered, that was a hard day,” said Wallace. “It wasn’t easy, but I felt there was a score out there but couldn’t get anything going.
“Good drives then mess it up, the ninth I messed that up to take an advantage into the back nine. I just kept pushing and pushing.
“It was bringing back memories of two years ago when I lost, I wasn’t quite focused then but that’s focus for me right there. I’m buzzing.
“I had the lead and I could have easily lost it a few times in the last couple of days, especially yesterday with how hard it was playing. But I stuck at it and that’s me, and that’s golf. For me, that’s Matt Wallace golf right there.”
This was the Englishman’s fifth DP World Tour title but his first since the 2018 Made In Denmark.
England’s Andrew Johnston closed with a 66 to finish in solo third place at 10-under while Switzerland’s Cedric Gugler (67) and Australia’s Jason Scrivener (67) tied for fourth at 8-under.
Alex Fitzpatrick of England who held a share of the lead after the first round played a final-round 68 to finish in a tie for sixth place at 7-under alongside the Netherlands’ Joost Luiten who closed with a bogey-free 64.
