Week 40: Bjerregaard jumps to World No.55

October 08, 2018

European Tour – Alfred Dunhill Links Championship

Lucas Bjerregaard produced a brilliant round of 67 on the Old Course at St Andrews to reel in defending champion Tyrrell Hatton and win his second European Tour title at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship.

The Dane started the day four shots behind Hatton and was six back with 12 to play as the Englishman looked set to make European Tour history and become just the fifth player to win the same event in three consecutive seasons.

A back nine stumble from the Ryder Cup star left the door ajar, however, and Bjerregaard kept his nerve to get to 15 under and take the title by one shot.

Hatton finished second alongside countryman and fellow Ryder Cup winner Tommy Fleetwood, with Finn Tapio Pulkkanen at 12 under.

Bjerregaard has been a hugely consistent performer since graduating from the Qualifying School in 2013, never finishing lower than 90th in the Race to Dubai Rankings presented by Rolex and winning the Portugal Masters in 2017 to go with the GolfSixes title alongside Thorbjørn Olesen.

PGA Tour - Safeway Open

Kevin Tway made a 10-foot birdie putt on the third hole of a playoff Sunday to win the season-opening Safeway Open at windy Silverado for his first PGA TOUR title.

The son of eight-time PGA TOUR winner Bob Tway, the 30-year-old former Oklahoma State player beat Ryan Moore on the par-4 10th after Brandt Snedeker dropped out on their first extra trip down the par-5 18th.

"It was nice to get hot at the end," Tway said. "I wasn't really in it on the front nine. Brandt made a couple bogeys starting the back. I was kind of right there, but kind of hanging around. Birdied 17, 18 to get into the playoff and then kept it going in the playoff -- and here I am."

After the wind died down in the late afternoon on the tree-lined North Course, Tway birdied the final two holes in regulation for a 1-under 71, then birdied all three holes in the playoff.

"I was just trying to put the ball in the fairway, which was very difficult," Tway said. "I knew the last few holes were a little bit easier, so tried to just keep making pars until then."

Asian Tour - Yeangder TPC

John Catlin of the United States became the fifth person to win three titles in a single season on the Asian Tour when he signed off with a flawless seven-under-par 65 to win the Yeangder Tournament Players Championship on Sunday.

American Sihwan Kim was tussling with Catlin for the outright lead right until the 16th hole where a costly bogey pegged him back to second place which he would eventually finish at the US$500,000 event.

The local hopes of welcoming another home winner were dashed as Chinese Taipei's Hung Chien-yao could not surmount the late charge needed and ended his week in third place at the Linkou International Golf and Country Club.

India's Viraj Madappa enjoyed a welcome return to form by finishing fourth after missing three cuts since his maiden breakthrough at home in in August.

Catlin, who held a share of the lead since the second round, had a decisive birdie on 16 to thank for giving him a two-shot cushion heading into his final two holes.

That advantage provided him with much relief as two straight pars on 17 and 18 saw him close with a winning total of 15-under-par 273 and sealed his place as the newest winner of the Yeangder Tournament Players Championship.

Challenge Tour - Monaghan Irish Challenge

Oliver Wilson claimed his second European Challenge Tour title of the season, winning the Monaghan Irish Challenge by two shots at Concra Wood Golf Club.

Wilson, who triumphed at the Swedish Challenge hosted by Robert Karlsson in August, shot a final round of 69, three under par, to become a two-time Challenge Tour winner and move to 15th on the Road to Ras Al Khaimah.

The Englishman started the final round one shot behind overnight leader Niklas Lemke but surged ahead following three birdies in his opening four holes. Wilson bogeyed the fifth hole to drop back to Lemke, but it was not for long as the former Ryder Cup player made his fourth gain of the day on the seventh.

Gusty conditions tested the players throughout the day, however, Wilson showed his experience, keeping a calm head to move to 13 under par after a birdie on the par five 15th.

A bogey on the 16th did not shake him while Lemke dropped to nine under par following a double bogey on the same hole. With two holes to play and a two-stroke advantage over clubhouse leader Marco Iten, Wilson parred his way in and was thrilled to seal his second Challenge Tour title of the year.

“I'm feeling pretty pumped after that,” he said. “It was hard work today and a proper grind. We knew it was going to be tough and there was strong cross-winds everywhere.

“I was delighted to come through it and I could've made it easier for myself but instead made it a little tricky when I was coming down the stretch. This course is such a good test that I had to keep hitting good shots and I managed to do that, and it wasn't too stressful coming up the last.

Asian Development Tour - PGM UMW Championship

Mathiam Keyser of South Africa kept his composure and won his third Asian Development Tour (ADT) title after carding a final-round two-over-par 73 at the PGM UMW Championship on Saturday.

The 31-year-old Keyser, who had to play 33 holes today as a result of weather disruptions in the preceding rounds, stumbled over the finishing line as he made three bogeys over the last four holes of the RM225,000 (approximately US$58,000) event.

His relatively poor score did not matter in the end as he signed for a 12-under-par 272 total for a wire-to-wire, two-shot victory at the Impian Golf and Country Club.

"I struggled over the last few holes, so it felt great to get it over the line and win this tournament," said a relieved Keyser.

"The victory has been coming for a while. I've been playing well this year (he posted four top-10s prior to the PGM UMW Championship) but I wasn't able to get everything working at the same time. Finally, we're here with a win!"

"I'm very happy with my game at the moment and my personal life. Having everything going in the right direction makes it easier to give it your best when you're out here competing."

Nordic Golf League - Race to Himmerland

Axel Kristoffer Olsen won the Race to Himmerland with a total score of 19 under par, he won Race to Himmerland 2018 with two strokes to Martin Leth Simonsen, Nicolai Kristensen and Swedish Erik Oja.

Aksel Kristoffer Olsen now leads the NGL rankings and he is sure of a regular place on the Challenge Tour next season.

PGA Tour LatinoAmerica - San Luis Championship

With a final-round of 70, Nicholas Chavarría won his second tournament in three starts, capturing the San Luis Championship by five shots over Mexico's Raúl Cortes. Combined with his win at the Sao Paulo Golf Club Championship last month, this victory vaults Echavarría to the No. 1 position on the earnings' chart.

With a five-shot advantage when the final round began, a margin that bulged to an eight-shot advantage midway through the round, Echavarría only had to avoid major mistakes to record the victory. When a rough patch in his round came, with bogeys at Nos. 10, 12 and 14, it didn't really matter because of the birdies he made on his front nine—four in a row, starting at No. 3. Still, he looked at the leaderboard and became a little nervous.

PGA Tour China - Zhuhai Championship

Kevin Techakanokboon shot a closing 2-over 73 to hold off Japan's Yuwa Kosaihira and win his first pro title, winning the Zhuhai Championship.

With Malaysian pro Arie Irawan as his caddie for the weekend, Techakanokboon parred the last seven holes at Orient Golf Club to finish 4-under overall, one ahead of Kosaihira, who despite the disappointment moved to third on the Order of Merit. Finishing third and two strokes behind was Order of Merit leader Charlie Saxon, who solidified his position at the top of the earnings' chart with his performance The Orient Golf Club.

Techakanokboon – nicknamed ‘Tech' – started the week 88th on the Order of Merit, so he was primarily determined to play well in a bid to finish in the top 50 on the money list and retain his Tour card for 2019. Things ended a little differently, as he took home the RMB 270,000 winner's check.

“It still really hasn't sunk in yet, and I'm sure later I'll really feel the emotions of it, but right now I'm just really happy to be done with it,” said Techakanokboon, who's now 20th on the money list as he heads to the season-ending RMB 2 million Clearwater Bay Open in Hong Kong.

“I'm feeling pretty relieved. I knew I needed a good three weeks in the last three events to try and keep my status for next year, and thankfully I've done that.” Techakanokbook improved to No. 20 on the last earnings' list.
