Rickie Fowler wins first title in fours years in playoff

Rocket Mortgage Classic R4

Rocket Mortgage ambassador Rickie Fowler defeated fellow American Collin Morikawa and Canadian Adam Hadwin with a birdie-3 on the first playoff hole (No. 18).

Fowler started the day with a one-shot lead before carding a bogey-free 68 to close with a 24-under, 264 total.

“It’s just nice to have this one out of the way said Fowler. “I’m obviously going to soak this one in and celebrate a bit. It’s just been a long road. I’ll get emotional at some point, whether it’s — I already did up there — in here or when we’re heading home or over this next week. We’re just going to be home for a couple days. We’re actually heading over to London with J.T. and Jordan and our wives. Yeah, we should have fun.”

This sixth PGA Tour victory came in his 316th start and was his first in 4 years, 4 months and 29 days since the 2019 WM Phoenix Open.

“This was definitely one of the main goals this year was to win. Outside of that was obviously playing well and doing what I’ve been doing to make it to the TOUR Championship, and kind of the — one of the end goals was to be a part of the Ryder Cup team and that’s still what we’re focusing on right now. Been a part of a handful and that’s — they’re very special weeks, so that’s where I have kind of my eyes.

“But planning to continue to play well and looking forward to a couple weeks over the pond with the Scottish and the British coming up, especially with how I’ve been playing and how I am playing.”

Morikawa closed with a 64 to finish runner-up for the seventh time in 94 starts on Tour.

“Playoffs suck when you’re on the wrong side of them. You put everything you want into it and comes down to one hole, but that’s what golf is. You’ve got to perform, you’ve got to execute the shots.” said Morikawa.

“And we did a lot of that really good this week, it was awesome to see. Haven’t seen that for 72 holes in a while.

“And I still wouldn’t have changed anything about hole 18 in regulation and the playoff. I truly thought I hit the perfect shot and I just was a little juiced, went a little far and just didn’t have the putter in the hand. Not that the chip wasn’t possible, but would have been nice to have the putter in the hand. Overall, still pretty proud of myself.”

Hadwin shot a 67 for his fifth runner-up finish in 239 starts and was pleased with his performance.

“I’m stoked, I’m through the roof right now. I mean, I got myself into a playoff at the end of the day, that’s what you want. You want a chance, you want a chance to win a golf tournament and I guess I kind of had a chance coming up 18, an outside chance.

“Then I hit two of the best golf shots I’ve hit all day in a playoff and really even that putt, it just didn’t go in. You know, I can take nothing but positives away from this week.

Americans Taylor Moore (67), Lucas Glover (65) and Peter Kuest (68) finished fourth at 21-under.
