Davis Thompson fired a 10-under, bogey-free 62 at the Plantation Course at Sea Island Golf Club to take a share of the opening lead alongside fellow American Doug Ghim and the Philippines Rico Hoey at the RSM Classic.
“The wind was down so felt like I could attack out there,” said Thompson. “Got off to a great start. Yeah, just kind of rode the wave going in the back nine and was able to make birdies on 8 and 9 coming in to kind of cap it off.
“”e’ll just kind of regroup and see what it’s going to be like tomorrow. You’ve just got to be patient out there because when the wind’s down you’re going to have a lot of wedges and a lot of birdie opportunities.
Just got to be patient and hopefully catch fire and just kind of ride that momentum.”
Thompson and Hoey’s 62 set a new Plantation course record. Previously there had been ten 63s on the Plantation Course, most recently by Lee Hodges in the second round in 2024. Thompson tied his low round on the PGA Tour while Hoey set a new one.
“Made an eagle. Hit all 18 greens, that’s a first for me. I thought I missed the green on the last with a chip shot, but stayed on and I was happy with that. Played well. I kept the ball in play and just gave myself a lot of opportunities,” said Hoey.
Doug Ghim stayed bogey-free at the Seaside Course for a career-low 60, tying the lowest score at The RSM Classic (Tommy Gainey/2012/R4, Sebastian Munoz/2021/R1, Tyler McCumber/2021/R4, Mackenzie Hughes/2023/R3). He also set his new low round score on Tour, he had previously fired a 62 at the 2025 John Deere Classic/R1.
“Honestly, anytime you can shoot double digits under par is a bonus.
Yeah, looking forward to the rest of the week but pleased with today,” said Ghim.
“I did everything pretty well today. I hit some shots close, made a
decent amount of putts today, kept it out of trouble for most of the day. Really, just mindset wise was really patient, accepting. It’s really easy to be impatient out there when you see all the low scores. If I can continue to have that mindset moving forward, I’ll have a good week.”
Andrew Putnam signed for a bogey-free 61 to take a share of fourth place at 9-under alongside compatriot Andrew Novak, both at the Seaside Course.
