Brian Stuard closed with a birdie for a 6-under 66 and a share of the lead heading into the final day of the Safeway Open alongside James Hahn and Cameron Percy.

Eight players held or shared the lead on Saturday but Stuard, Hahn and Percy emerged as the leaders in spite of them all running into trouble at various points.

Stuard hit only 10 of 14 birdies and a 7-foot putt on the 18th found the rough.

Percy joined the leaders with a 68 but bogeys on the 11th and 14th almost ruled him out until he birdied two of his final three holes.

Overnight leader Sam Burns struggled and closed with a 72 and is tied in fourth place with Kristoffer Ventura and Harry Higgs.

Phil Mickelson has now gonne 42 consecutive holes without making a bogey or worse. PGA Tour statistics show his career-best bogey-free streak was 49 holes in 2004, yet he is not happy with his game.

“This is the worst I've played in the last three months,” Mickelson said Saturday afternoon at Silverado Resort and Spa in Napa, California.

“It's deceptive because I didn't make a bogey, but I didn't drive it well, I didn't chip it well and I didn't putt well,” Mickelson said. “I turned a 64 into a 70 and I've got some work to do. But heading into this week or the last three, four weeks, I was playing really well, so hopefully it's not far away.”
