“A little bit unexpected because I had a few weeks off and took a little time away from golf, so I didn’t know where things would stand coming out today.
“I made a nice putt on 6, I don’t know what it was, 30, 40 feet, and then holed the wedge on 7. That really jump started things.
“It was an interesting day. I feel like I missed some very makable birdie putts, but I holed some real nice long ones for eagle on 16 and some other long ones.
“Certainly happy with the score, but I’ve got to make a lot of birdies the next few days.”
Fellow American Maverick McNealy carded a bogey-free 64 for a share of second place alongside South Korean Si Woo Kim.
