Local favourite Shaun Norris went head-to-head with fellow South African Dean Burmester and emerged the winner of the Steyn City Championship by three shots at 25-under.

“It’s been a tough journey and having my brother on the bag, my wife here, my little girl – it’s splendid, I can’t explain.

“It’s absolutely beautiful doing this in front of my home crowd and in front of my family.”

Norris started the day with a four shot lead but produced two bogeys and only pars on the front nine to make the turn in 38. He fought back with three birdies to regain a share of the lead before another birdie at the 17th to close with a 70.

“From the word go I told my brother ‘let’s have fun, let’s actually try and feel like we’re playing back home’,” said Norris.

“In the first two rounds it definitely went that way, in the third round similar. Unfortunately today we didn’t start so well but we finished nicely so I can’t complain.”

Burmester made the turn in 33 after an eagle, two birdies and a bogey. He continued with back-to-back birdies on the 10th and 11th. A double bogey at the par-4 17th scuppered his chances and he closed with a 69 to finish second at 22-under.

South African Oliver Bekker produced a final round 67 to tie for third with Germany’s Matti Schmid (71) at 19-under.

Finn Tapio Pulkkane (67), South African James Hard Du Preez (68) and Dane Joachim B. Hansen (71) finished fifth at 18-under.
