Round 4 – Wade Ormsby claims first European Tour title
November 27, 2017
Australian Wade Ormsby won his maiden European Tour title with a two-under-par 68 in the final round of the Hong Kong Open on Sunday after Rafa Cabrera-Bello bogeyed the 18th to blow his chance of forcing a playoff.
Cabrera-Bello was tied at 11-under-par with Ormsby, who also closed with bogey, heading to the last but sent his second shot into the bunker to finish second at 10-under alongside Julian Suri (66), Paul Peterson (67) and Alexander Bjork (68).
“It means a lot to me,” said 37-year-old Ormsby, who was playing in his 264th European Tour event.
“I’ve played a lot of golf in Europe, everywhere and a few bumps along the way but it’s pretty cool to get a win this late in your career.
“I probably won’t sleep too much on that flight on the way to Oz tonight.”
Race to Dubai champion Tommy Fleetwood fired a final round 69 to finish sixth in the season-opening European Tour event, which is co-sanctioned by the Asian Tour.
Indian SSP Charawsia, who held a one-shot lead coming into the final day, dropped of top spot after a triple-bogey just before the turn and eventually finished in a share of seventh after a 72.
Spaniard Cabrera-Bello (70) finished runner-up for the second year in a row while last year’s champion Sam Brazel finished in share of 23rd.
Round 3 – S.S.P. Chawrasia holds on to lead
November 26, 2017
S.S.P. Chawrasia shot a 1-under 69 Saturday in the third round for a one-stroke lead at the Hong Kong Open.
The 39-year-old Indian is at 10-under 200 overall at the Hong Kong Golf Club.
Last year’s runner-up, Rafa Cabrera Bello, hit six birdies, two bogeys and an eagle on the par-4 10th for a 6-under 64. The Spaniard shares second place with Australia’s Wade Ormsby (65).
Race to Dubai winner Tommy Fleetwood (66) was two off the pace and tied for fourth with Sweden’s Alexander Bjork (67) and Belgian Thomas Detry (66).
”I hit good putts that just didn’t go in. You know, it was just a really steady round,” Fleetwood said, adding that a ”nice birdie on the last hole always makes you feel a lot better.”
Former champion Justin Rose (68) is at 5 under, a shot ahead of Masters champion Sergio Garcia (66) who hit five birdies and a bogey.
Chawrasia led by two shots after the second round and said he was glad to hold onto his lead, with another low score needed to take the title.
”I’m happy with the score today, although I definitely left a couple of shots out there. I felt a little extra pressure today which (is) probably why (I) missed a couple of putts … think I can do something special tomorrow,” Chawrasia said.
Cabrera Bello lost by a shot in 2016 to Sam Brazel of Australia.
”I think I’m going to be within reach, so I do believe that I can win it for sure,” Cabrera Bello said. ”I think it would be just a little extra special, the fact that last year I finished runner-up and this year perhaps I could win it.”
Round 2 – S.S.P. Chawrasia doubles lead
November 25, 2017
India’s SSP Chawrasia forged a two-shot lead at the Hong Kong Open on Friday, overcoming buffeting winds to card a four-under-par 66 in the second round at Fanling.
The 39-year-old, searching for his first European Tour victory away from home soil, extended his one-shot overnight lead at Hong Kong Golf Club with five birdies in the first 13 holes.
He dropped a shot at the 14th but completed the round without further mishaps to remain top of the leader board on nine under par.
Chawrasia had led by five at one stage, but South African Thomas Aiken shot a 64 to cut the gap to two strokes.
“It was a great round today,” Chawrasia said. “I was five under at one time and then three-putted 14. Still, it’s a good score, four under. I’m happy.”
Swedish duo Alexander Bjork and Joakim Lagergren, American Julian Suri and Thailand’s Poom Saksansin finished at five under on 135.
Briton Tommy Fleetwood, who was crowned 2017 Race to Dubai champion last week, hit a second consecutive 68 to remain five off the lead alongside Thomas Detry, Jamie Donaldson, Dylan Frittelli, Keith Horne, Marcus Kinhult, Wade Ormsby and Micah Lauren Shin.
Round 1 – S.S.P. Chawrasia leads with opening 65
November 24, 2017
S.S.P. Chawrasia had six birdies and a bogey Thursday for a 5-under 65 and a one stroke lead at the Hong Kong Open, the first event of the 2018 season.
Playing in sunny but breezy conditions at the Hong Kong Golf Club, the greens had the players struggling to gauge the approach.
”Very tough conditions today,” Chawrasia said. ”It’s very firm greens, to be honest. I’m just trying to hit the second shot on the green and trying to make it like a two-putt.”
Shubhankar Sharma and Matthew Fitzpatrick (both 66) were one shot behind, while seven others were tied for fourth a further stroke behind.
”Hit it great tee to green,” Fitzpatrick said. ”I think I had like seven or eight chances inside 15 feet, and on a day like today when it’s so windy and such a tough golf course, with how tight it is, yeah, it was a good day.”
Justin Rose, who won the title in 2015, shot was 2 under with five birdies and three bogeys.
”I think the course played a couple shots harder than it typically does,” Rose said. ”I like this course. I think it offers plenty of birdie opportunities.”
Masters champion Sergio Garcia, Rafa Cabrera Bello and defending champion Sam Brazel (69) were in a group of 16 at 1 under.
