Matt Fitzpatrick wins third PGA Tour title

Valspar Championship R4

Matt Fitzpatrick watches his drive at the Scottish Open

Matt Fitzpatrick started the day three strokes behind the lead and fired a 68 including a birdie at the final hole to win the Valspar Championship by one stroke at 11-under.

This was his third PGA Tour title (2022 US Open, 2023 RBC Heritage) in his 183rd start at 31 years, 6 months, 21 days.

He ranked No. 1 in Strokes Gained: Tee To Green for the week (11.616) and No. 1 in Scrambling (17 of 20).

“Felt like the front nine I played pretty solid,” said Fitzpatrick. “I’ve actually not looked at my stats yet which is normally what I do. But I feel like I played pretty solid. Sort of a continuation of the week of the back nine I felt like it was just, it was like really close to being good, but I was just almost on the wrong side of it every time. Just a couple of shots only just into the rough. I wouldn’t say there was major wides, they were just in the rough every time. They made it easy for the short game shots because I felt like I could just kind of bumble it out of rough down towards the flag.

“But then hit a fantastic shot on 17, and a really nice shot on 18 as well. Obviously to make the putt on 18 was special.”

Fitzpatrick was bogey-free for his last 36 holes. He was the only player to shoot four rounds in the 60s this week and made just four bogeys for the week, the fewest of any player in the field. He is the third winner of the Valspar Championship to record a bogey-free final round (2012 Luke Donald, 2013 Kevin Streelman).

He also joins Donald (2012) and Paul Casey (2018, 2019) as players from England to win the Valspar Championship.

Fitzpatrick was runner-up at last week’s Players Championship, bogeying the final hole to lose to Cameron Young by one stroke. The last player to finish runner-up then win the following week was Davis Thompson at the 2024 Rocket Classic/T2 and John Deere Classic/Won.

“I felt like last week I played so well, right until the end,” he added. “To lose the way I did, it’s always disappointing, always feels like it takes a little out of you when you spend four days of your life battling to try and get that top spot, and to lose it right at the death is always difficult to take. So this week was important to get back on the horse and try and push myself to continue playing well.”

He has made seven cuts in seven starts on Tour this season, with three top-10 results (9th/WM Phoenix Open, 2nd/The Players Championship, Won/Valspar Championship).

American David Lipsky made two birdies and one bogey for a 70 and had to settle for second place at 10-under. He was seeking his first title in his 145th start on Tour.

Two-time DP World Tour winner Jordan Smith of England began the final round seven strokes off the lead and finished third at 9-under, his best PGA Tour finish in 25 starts, following a 66 featuring seven birdies and two bogey.

54-hole leader Sungjae Im of South Korea carded a 3-over 74 having made five bogeys to finish three strokes back in T4. No player who has held a 54-hole lead/co-lead during the four Florida Swing tournaments this season has gone on to win.

Three-time DP World Tour winner Marco Penge of England posted his second top-five result in 13 starts on Tour (T2/Genesis Scottish Open). He fired five birdies and five bogeys for a 71 and tied for fourth place. Penge was seeking his first PGA Tour title in his Valspar Championship debut while trying to become the first rookie to win since Michael Brennan (2025 Bank of Utah Championship).

Finally, also in T4 was American Xander Schauffele who made one bogey and closed with a 6-under 65.
