Young Chinese amateur Kuang Yang made history at the 25th edition of the Volvo China Open as the 14-year-old became the second-youngest player to make the cut at a European Tour event, while Wu Ashun continued the joy for the home crowds by taking a two-stroke lead into the weekend.

“It was a great day again today," said Wu. "I made eight birdies and one bogey. I hit a lot of quality shots today and made a lot of birdies. I’m very happy. I hit a bad tee shot on five and I had a headache there again because I made a bogey there yesterday too!

"During the season break, I took some time off to evaluate my game. I made some swing changes and it got better and better. I enjoy playing at home. It’s a great week as I have my family and friends here with me. It’s a good feeling."

The throngs of Chinese fans were witness to an historic moment at Genzon Golf Club as the young amateur holed a nerveless putt on the 18th to become the youngest player to make the cut at a regular European Tour event - outside of the Majors - at 14 years, six months and 12 days.

“I’m really happy – it’s amazing. I was really nervous on 18 as it is a long putt for me but it went in and I‘m so happy – there are not enough words to describe the feeling.

“Although my putting was better and my game was better than yesterday, the score was the same. I’m just so happy and want to thank my mum, my dad, my head teacher and members of my family for all their support.”

Guan Tian-lang remains the youngest in any event to have made the weekend’s play - at the 2013 Masters Tournament, aged 14 years, five months and 16 days.

Wu, meanwhile, was on imperious form as the 2015 Volvo China Open champion carded eight birdies including one to close out his round on the ninth hole, moving to a 13 under total. The three-time European Tour winner’s 65 was the joint best round of the day and he was three clear until Finn Pulkkanen made a flurry of birdies late in the day to sign for a four under 68 and move to 11 under.

“It was a really strong back nine for me today, I made a lot of birdie putts – my putter was hot - so it was a really good day," said Pulkkanen. "My driving was a little bit off today and I didn’t hit the fairways today so I had to grind it out on the par fives – that didn’t make for many easy birdies - but I’m happy with the round.

“I holed a lot of putts in the dark which was good for me, but on the last hole it was really dark - I hit a bad drive there anyways. I’m going to continue the same for the weekend, I saw that Wu Ashun is leading and I really wanted to play with him in the final group. There are going to be a lot of people so it’s going to be fun.”

A total of ten Chinese players - three of them amateurs - will play over the weekend in the marquee edition of the national open, beating the previous tournament record of seven.
