Former Ryder cup stars among 18 LIV Golfers set for Open Championship final qualifying

Several golfers from the LIV Golf League will be aiming to secure a place at Royal Portrush for the Open next month

The Open Championship takes place next month at Royal Portrush and the final qualifying entrants and tee times have been revealed.

LIV Golfers such as Bryson DeChambeau, Jon Rahm, Cameron Smith and Brooks Koepka don’t have to worry about final qualifying. They all have major exemptions, but others aren’t quite so lucky.

Indeed, a total of 18 players from the breakaway league will be looking to secure a place in the field at Portrush in a few weeks.

This includes a former major champions, several Ryder Cup stars and even someone who shot a round of 62 at the 2017 Open Championship.

One name who wont be making an attempt to qualify for the final major of the year is Sergio Garcia. The Spaniard could still secure a place in Northern Ireland, as he holds the one-spot open via the LIV Golf standings.

Just who are the 18 players attempting to seal their place at the Open?

Some big names are looking to qualify for the Open

On July 1, four courses will play host to the final qualifier, with players having to negotiate 36 holes across a single day.

The 18 LIV Golfers have been split across Dundonald Links, Royal Cinque Ports, West Lancashire and Burnham and Berrow.

Burnham & Berrow

A total of five LIV stars will tee it up at Burnham and Berrow next week. Jinichiro Kozuma, Caleb Surratt and Anirban Lahiri are among the early starters.

Abraham Ancer is also playing at this site. The Mexican has won one individual events on the Saudi-backed league and he is looking to qualify for his seventh Open.

The biggest draw is Paul Casey. The Englishman finished third in 2010, but hasn’t contested a major since the 2022 Open.

Casey, who represented Europe in five Ryder Cups, will be hoping this drought ends next week.

Dundonald Links

Adrian Meronk tees it up at the Ayrshire venue, alongside Branden Grace, who shot that stunning 62 way back in 2017.

Lee Westwood has five top-five finishes at the Championship as he aims to make a return for the first time since 2022.

The Ryder Cup stalwart may be past his prime, but it would be a solid accomplishment returning to the major stage.

Royal Cinque Ports

This venue held two previous Opens in 1909 and 1920, but was taken off the rota. In total, six LIV Golfers will be looking to seal their place at Portrush at the course.

Luis Masaveu, David Puig, Dean Burmester and Peter Uihlein have played in nine Open Championships combined, yet it is the draw of the other two entrants at Royal Cinque Ports which will attract the biggest crowd.

Indeed, both Graeme McDowell and Ian Poulter are teeing it up at Royal Cinque Ports. The pair have a combined 34 appearances at the tournament, although neither have won the Open.

The two Ryder Cup stars will certainly be a big draw on the English coast next week. Can they make a return to the championship? Only time will tell.

West Lancashire

Four LIV Golfers have entered at West Lancashire for final qualifying. Lucas Herbert, Sam Horsfield, Andy Ogletree and Harold Varner III make up the quartet seeking a spot at Portrush next month.
