As the anticipation builds for the 2024 Presidents Cup, International Team Captain Mike Weir has announced that Japan’s Shigeki Maruyama will serve as his fifth and final assistant.
The iconic team event set to take place at The Royal Montreal Golf Club in Montreal, Canada from 24-29 September, will see Mauyama join some big names in the world of golf, including Ernie Els, Trevor Immelman, Geoff Ogilvy and Camilo Villegas, who were confirmed as assistants in April.
A seasoned veteran of the Presidents Cup, Maruyama competed in the 1998 and 2000 events, garnering an impressive 6-2-0 record.
Maruyama’s most notable performance, however, came in 1998 when he delivered a flawless 5-0-0 record, helping to secure an International victory over the US in Australia.
The remarkable achievement places him among a select group of only six players in Presidents Cup history to have achieved a perfect 5-0-0 record in a single week.
Expressing his excitement about the appointment, Captain Mike Weir stated, “I am thrilled to announce Shigeki as my fifth captain’s assistant for the 2024 Presidents Cup.
His record in this event speaks for itself, but more importantly, he adds a trusted voice in our team room and is someone who will inspire these 12 players through his unwavering support and dynamic personality.”
Maruyama’s honours extend beyond his Presidents Cup appearances. During his PGA Tour career, he secured three victories, with his last win coming at the 2003 Wyndham Championship.
The 54-year-old also posted three top-10 finishes in major championships, including a career-best T4 at the 2004 U.S. Open. His success on the Japan Golf Tour is equally noteworthy, with ten victories to his name.
Additionally, Maruyama represented Japan in the 2002 World Cup of Golf, where he partnered with Toshimitsu Izawa to claim a two-shot victory over the United States team comprising Phil Mickelson and David Toms.
Reflecting on his new role, Maruyama shared, “Representing the International Team in the Presidents Cup as both a player in 1998 and 2000 and later as a captain’s assistant in 2013 was one of the most valuable experiences in my golf career.
I am honoured that Captain Weir has given me the chance to be part of this special brotherhood once again. I am looking forward to a great week in Montreal and helping to deliver an incredible atmosphere for our players and fans in Canada.”
