Brian Campbell started the day one shot behind Aldrich Potgieter’s lead and closed with a 70, for a career-low 72-hole score of 20-under 264, to join him in a playoff for the Mexico Open at VidantaWorld. Campbell birdied the first extra hole for victory while Potgieter parred.
“Just so special,” said the American. “If I’m honest, it feels really numb right now. I’m so appreciative of this week. Honestly, the people who put on tournaments like this, it gets overlooked, but getting the courses ready, getting us ready, it’s really special what they do week in and week out. I’m just so over-the-top thankful for everything and just stoked right now.”
This first PGA Tour title came in Campbell’s 28th start at the age of 31 years.
“All day. I thought I was going to throw up at multiple times during the day. That last hole, I guess I just wanted to keep the party going a little longer but not by design. Yeah, it was really fun to play against him. We had some guys further back coming up to get us too, so we had a lot to think about.
“I mean, shout out to Aldrich, his game is really good, impressive. Just excited to see what’s next.”
54-hole leader and PGA Tour rookie Potgieter finished second, earning his career-best finish in his 10th start on Tour.
American Isaiah Salinda carded a final-round 65 and recorded his career-best result in his 15th start on Tour.
England’s Aaron Rai opened the final-round with three consecutive birdies and an eagle on the par-5 6th and closed with a 67 to finish T4 at 18-under, his 12th career top-10 in his 97th start.
American Ben Griffin also signed for a 67 for his share of fourth place.
As winner of the Mexico Open at VidantaWorld, Brian Campbell earns a spot in all five remaining Signature Events, while other Tour members are fighting for spots in the Aon Next 10 and the Aon Swing 5 to earn a place in the field at the Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by Mastercard.
