Ryan Gerard made seven birdies and two bogeys on Saturday for 12 points and takes a share of the lead with a total of 34 at the Barracuda Championship.
“I’ve been hitting it really great for very long time. I think when you play at elevation like this and trajectory matters a lot more, ball kind of falls out of the air if you don’t strike it great. It’s kind of been helpful for me because I was hitting it the center of the face almost every shot so the ball is kind of flying exactly how far I want it to,” said Gerard.
The American holds his first career 54-hole lead/co-lead on the PGA Tour.
In 22 starts this season, Gerard has recorded three top-10 finishes (9th/Texas Children’s Houston Open, 2nd/Valero Texas Open, T8/PGA Championship).
Overnight leader Rico Hoey of the Philippines fired six birdies and three bogeys to retain a share of the lead with 8 points. He also holds his first career 54-hole lead/co-lead on the PGA Tour.
“Struggled early but kind of caught fire on the back, so it was nice to end that way,” said Hoey.
“I just was praying the putter would get hot because the putter was really cold. I felt like I was hitting it well, doing things well. A little bit nervous I guess. Once I kind of settled in it was nice. Kept it rolling. Erik [van Rooyen] was playing great, so it was nice to get into a rhythm with him.”
His best finish in 51 starts on Tour was P2 at the 2024 ISCO Championship. He has had one top-10 in 21 starts this season, a T7 at the ONEflight Myrtle Beach Classic.
Of the fourteen players who sit T10 or better, only one player has won on the PGA Tour. 2021 Barracuda Championship Erik van Rooyen of South Africa made an eagle at the par-5 3rd as well as two birdies and one bogey for 8 points and currently lies in third place with a total of 33.
In the last six years at the Barracuda Championship, only one player who held the 54-hole lead/co-lead went on to win (Chez Reavie/2022).
French DP World Tour member Tom Vaillant made five birdies and one bogey for 9 points and fourth place with a total of 32.
Since 2012, the Barracuda Championship has been played using Modified Stableford scoring system, allocating points based on the number of strokes taken at each hole, with the goal of achieving the highest overall number of points.
