Marco Penge wins third title this season in playoff

Marco Penge started the day with a four-shot lead at the Open de España presented by Madrid but made the turn in 38 after making two bogeys, he stayed bogey-free and made one birdie in the back nine to close with a 1-over 72 and enter a playoff.

Fellow Englishman Daniel Brown had fired an eagle at the par-5 4th as well as five birdies, one bogey and a double bogey at the par-4 5th for a 67 amid several delays for treatments to his shoulder and neck and reached 15-under to enter the playoff.

Penge birdied the first extra hole at the 18th to win his third DP World Tour title, all in 2025, while Brown parred.

“Dan and Joel [Girrbach] played great today, they were holing putts and I just couldn’t really get it in the hole, it felt like I was really up against it,” said Penge.

“But I felt like I managed myself really well and I actually think tee to green, I feel like I played really solid. It doesn’t matter the putts, I think I used them all yesterday, but obviously holing that one there was worth the wait.

“I was getting a little frustrated at times but I was reminding myself I was so patient the first three rounds, and that’s the reason I played the way I did, so I just tried to stay in the same sort of mindset,” he added.

“Credit to the lads, they did unbelievable to catch me, and I’m just very grateful that I can be the one that wins.”

Penge is now qualified for the Open Championship and the Masters next season.

“It’s crazy. It’s a golf course that I’ve always wanted to play, because I feel like my game sets up really good for it,” he said of Augusta National.

“My goal was to get in the top 50 in the world by the end of the year. I think that made it a little easier playing the play-off, knowing that if I don’t win, I’m still going to be at the Masters. I tried to do a bit of reverse psychology there but no, I’m looking forward to it.”

Switzerland’s Girrbach fired six birdies and four birdies for a 69 and finished third at 14-under.

Northern Ireland’s Tom McKibbin also carded six birdies and four birdies and finished fourth at 12-under.
