Drama unfolds in the LIV Golf Singapore finale

Bryson DeChambeau survived a chaotic playoff finish at LIV Golf Singapore on Sunday, defeating Richard T. Lee after a dramatic closing sequence at Sentosa Golf Club.

The Crushers GC captain appeared to have thrown the tournament away on the very first extra hole. His drive on the 18th splashed into the water that runs down the left side of the fairway, leaving DeChambeau scrambling simply to salvage par and keep the playoff alive.

Instead the door swung open.

After taking his penalty drop, DeChambeau produced a sharp recovery from the rough beyond the green and holed out for par. Lee, who had reached the putting surface in regulation and looked poised to win, missed a short 2-foot par putt that would have extended the playoff. The unexpected miss handed DeChambeau the title at 14-under.

The moment capped a tense LIV Golf Singapore finale that swung dramatically in the final minutes.

DeChambeau, who secured his fourth LIV Golf individual title, admitted the victory brought a rush of emotion:

“A lot of emotion right now. Good emotion, struggling emotion, just everything that you could possibly imagine, it’s there. But a lot of joy.”

Late birdies send tournament to sudden death

Lee had forced the extra hole moments earlier with a confident birdie at the par-5 18th in regulation. The Canadian closed with a 5-under 66 to reach 14-under. Playing one group behind, DeChambeau answered with a birdie of his own to match the total and send the contest to sudden death.

The closing stretch unfolded in difficult conditions. Rain delays interrupted play twice during the afternoon and the shifting weather added tension as the final groups battled toward the finish.

Both players responded well after the restart. DeChambeau played the back nine without a bogey while Lee surged late with four birdies across his final six holes.

Niemann’s lead fades late on Sunday

Their charge came at the expense of Joaquin Niemann. The Torque GC captain held a two-shot lead before the stoppage but three bogeys after play resumed saw him slip to fourth place.

Lee still produced a landmark result. As an independent Wild Card player he delivered the strongest finish yet in that category and moved himself firmly into the early season points race. His runner-up finish lifted him into seventh place in the individual standings.

Asked about the missed par putt, Lee remained composed despite the disappointment:

“It was a short putt, and I wanted to just hit it hard, and I hit it a little too hard. I think the adrenaline was pumping a little bit. Then again, I felt like I had it this week. I played really well. Hopefully next week I can try again.”

Reflections after the LIV Golf Singapore finale

Later, DeChambeau acknowledged the unusual circumstances surrounding the victory and expressed sympathy for his opponent following the dramatic LIV Golf Singapore finale, saying:

“You never want to win that way – I’ll be the first to admit that. But it’s happened before, and golf is a fickle and uneasy game at a lot of moments. That’s just sometimes the way the cards fall, but I just didn’t like seeing it happen.”

He also praised Lee’s performance across the week:

“As much as winning is great, I have a lot of respect for Richard and the way he golfs his ball out there. He’s a real superstar, and the league should be really proud to have him as a Wild Card.”

4Aces extend momentum with team victory

While the LIV Golf Singapore finale delivered individual drama, the team honours belonged once again to Dustin Johnson’s 4Aces GC. Fresh off their victory in Hong Kong the group carried that momentum into Singapore.

Thomas Pieters set the tone with a bogey-free 6-under 65 while Anthony Kim also produced a clean card with a 69. Johnson matched that score and Thomas Detry added a 70 as the team posted the lowest combined total of the day to win by five shots.

Johnson said:

“Obviously the league gets better every single year. It gets harder to win. You’ve got to have four really good players if you want to have a chance to win. Right now, I feel like we do.”

Strong finishes from Westwood and Rahm

Lee Westwood enjoyed one of his best LIV Golf performances with a closing 69 that secured third place. The Majesticks co-captain only recently returned from a wrist injury and has quickly climbed into the top 10 of the season standings after just two appearances.

Jon Rahm continued his consistent start to the campaign with a fifth-place finish. The Legion XIII captain has now placed inside the top five in every event this season following his win in Hong Kong last week.

The dramatic playoff ensured the LIV Golf Singapore finale delivered one of the most memorable finishes of the season so far.
