Michael Kim shot a 12-under 59 at TPC Twin Cities on Friday, taking a three-stroke lead into the weekend at the 3M Open.
Kim made 12 birdies without a bogey in the second round, including four in succession to finish. His closing run moved him to 14-under 128 through 36 holes, three ahead of Ben Kohles, Chandler Phillips and Emiliano Grillo.
It was the 15th score of 59 in PGA Tour history and the 16th sub-60 score. Jim Furyk, who shot 59 in 2013 and a Tour-record 58 at the 2016 Travelers Championship, remains the only player to break 60 twice.
Kim became the first player to go below 60 on Tour since Jake Knapp opened with 59 at the 2025 Cognizant Classic in the Palm Beaches, 512 days earlier. He also broke the 3M Open record of 60, set twice in 2025 by Adam Svensson and Kurt Kitayama.
Twelve birdies and 21 putts
Kim began the day at 2-under after an opening 69. He made five consecutive birdies from the third, then collected another three across four holes beginning at the ninth.
Eight of his 12 birdie putts came from at least 10 feet. Kim needed only 21 putts and holed a combined 145 feet 4 inches, finishing with a 24-foot 4-inch birdie putt on the 18th.
“I tend to leave those short when it’s that uphill, and the last thing was just get it there; just don’t leave it short,” Kim said.
The ball dropped, prompting Kim to raise both arms before pumping his fist. His 12 birdies left him one short of the PGA Tour record for a round, shared by Adam Hadwin and Chip Beck.
Kim gained 10.882 strokes on the field. He led the field in Strokes Gained: Approach the Green at 4.204 and Strokes Gained: Putting at 6.524, while also recording the best proximity figure and fewest putts.
“When you hit a putt, and it does exactly what you kind of envisioned before you hit it, it’s an awesome feeling,” Kim said. “Felt like that all day out there.”
Kim takes control of the tournament
It was five shots better than Kim’s previous Tour low of 62. Before Friday, he had broken 70 only three times in 13 competitive rounds at TPC Twin Cities and had made one cut across five previous 3M Open starts.
Kim had considered skipping the tournament after playing five consecutive weeks and missing his previous three cuts. He instead returned home after The Open Championship, rested for several days and travelled to Minnesota.
“Today was an awesome day, but still, I’m only halfway there,” Kim said. “Still need to kind of get focused up for the weekend.”
The 33-year-old is seeking his second PGA Tour victory in his 275th start. His only previous 36-hole lead came at the 2018 John Deere Classic, where he secured his first title.
Kohles followed his opening 62 with a 69 to reach 11-under. Phillips joined him in second place after a 65 as did Grillo after a second-round 67.
World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler sits seven strokes behind Kim after a 70. Scheffler reached 9-under before a water-bound approach led to a double bogey, and he also dropped a shot at the par-three 17th.
