WGC-Dell Match Play - Fitzpatrick suffers heavy defeat

Matt Fitzpatrick started the day at the RBC Heritage with a three-shot lead and fired two birdies on his first three holes as well as a bogey at the 18th to close with a 1-under 70 and reach 18-under.

American World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler fired a bogey-free, 4-under 67 to join Fitzpatrick at 18-under and set up a playoff but lost when Fitzpatrick made the winning putt.

The Englishman is now 2-0 in playoffs with both coming at the RBC Heritage (def. Jordan Spieth with a birdie on the third playoff hole in 2023). He is now 3-for-5 converting the 54-hole lead/co-lead to victory (2019 Arnold Palmer Invitational/2nd, 2022 US Open/1st, 2023 RBC Heritage/1st, 2023 BMW Championship/T2, 2026 RBC Heritage/1st).

He recorded 21 birdies and one eagle this week, the most birdies or better by any player.

“I felt like I obviously got off to a great start, and poor three-putt on 2 and you feel like almost what could have been. But I would have taken it before I teed off,” said Fitzpatrick.

“I knew Scottie was going to make some birdies down the stretch, and I kind of had to hang in there a little bit. The only chip shot that I found into grain all week was in regulation there.

“It means the world. This is a tournament I wanted to win growing up, arguably more than any of the majors before I understood about the game. To win it twice means the world. To go out today and go toe-to-toe with Scottie and get over the line there on the 73rd is special.

This fourth PGA Tour title came in Fitzpatrick’s 185th start at the age of 31. This is his first time with a multiple-win PGA Tour season; he won nine DP World Tour titles with one multiple-win year (2016 Nordea Masters, 2016 DP World Tour Championship).

In nine starts this season, he has had four top-10 finishes, highlighted by two wins (Valspar Championship, RBC Heritage).

Scheffler now has 29 straight top-25 finishes on Tour, his last finish outside the top 25 was at the 2024 BMW Championship (T33).

He was 100 per cent in Scrambling in the final round (8 of 8) and joined Si Woo Kim and Russell Henley as players with the fewest bogeys this week (3).

This runner-up finish marks his 45th time in 158 starts finishing T3 or better on Tour (28.5%); win (20), 2nd (12), 3rd (13).

He finished runner-up in back-to-back starts for the first time in his career (Masters Tournament, RBC Heritage).

“I did some solid stuff,” said Scheffler. “I think I had only one bogey over the weekend here, so did a lot of really good things. Would have liked to have seen a few more putts go in, but overall I executed the way I wanted to. It was just challenging out there. The wind is swirling all around, and it was hard to make birdies late in the day.

“I think in both weeks I put myself behind the 8-ball going into the weekend and had really nice Saturdays and Sundays in order to get myself into contention.

“On Sunday it’s a shot here or there that makes a difference. This was one of those weeks where anytime Fitzy needed something to happen, he made something happen. He definitely earned the win, and he just played great golf.”

Korean Si Woo Kim made four birdies and one bogey at the final hole to close with a 68 and finish third at 16-under. For the first time in his 11th season he has had three top-3 finishes in one season (T2 Farmers Insurance Open, T3/WM Phoenix Open, 3rd/RBC Heritage).

American Collin Morikawa made two bogeys in his 67 for a share of fourth place at 13-under alongside compatriot Harris English who made a final-hole bogey for a 69 and Sweden’s Ludvig Åberg who held the first-round lead and closed with four birdies, one bogey and a double bogey at the par-4 16th for a 70.

Morikawa withdrew from The Players Championship with a back injury and in his second start back on Tour has made two consecutive top-10 finishes and T7/Masters Tournament) and fifth of the season.

Åberg recorded his fourth top-5 finish in his last five starts this season (T3/Arnold Palmer Invitational, T5/The Players Championship, T5/Valero Texas Open, T21/Masters Tournament, T4/RBC Heritage).

American Michael Kim equaled his career-low 18-hole score on Tour with a bogey-free 62 that included a career-best 20 putts, the fewest of any player (96) and one of seven players with fewer than 100 putts this week. He finished T25 at 8-under.
