Ángel Ayora will make his Open Championship debut at Royal Birkdale wearing a series of SEVE Collection looks inspired by defining moments from Seve Ballesteros’ career, 50 years after the legendary Spaniard announced himself to the world at the same venue.
The 21-year-old will wear the collection throughout The 154th Open, with two outfits carrying direct historical references. On Friday, Ayora will pair a Lemon Drop polo with Chestnut Brown trousers, reimagining the yellow-and-brown outfit Ballesteros wore during that 1976 week. For the final round on Sunday, he switches to Emerson White with navy trousers and sweater, a modern take on the white-and-navy “Seve Sunday” look Ballesteros wore when he won the Claret Jug at St Andrews in 1984.
Ballesteros at Birkdale, 1976
In 1976, a largely unknown 19-year-old Ballesteros captivated galleries at Royal Birkdale with the fearless, imaginative golf that would come to define his career. He led by two shots through 54 holes before finishing joint runner-up behind Johnny Miller.
At the final hole, Ballesteros produced one of the Championship’s most memorable shots: an audacious chip-and-run between the bunkers guarding the 18th green, followed by a birdie putt to secure a share of second place with Jack Nicklaus. He would go on to win The Open in 1979, 1984 and 1988, but Royal Birkdale was where a global audience first discovered him.
Ayora’s credentials
Ayora gets to Birkdale on the strength of his results. In his first DP World Tour season, he posted ten top-10 finishes — the most of any player — and ended up 20th in the Race to Dubai rankings, which booked his spot in the field. His breakthrough professional win came at the Rosa Challenge Tour in Poland in 2024, and he secured his DP World Tour card the same year by placing fourth on the Road to Mallorca Rankings.
“Playing in my first Open Championship is something I have worked towards and dreamed about for a long time,” Ayora said. “To make my debut at Royal Birkdale, where Seve first showed the world what made him so special, makes it even more meaningful.
“I am proud to wear SEVE Collection throughout the week and to help celebrate everything he achieved and continues to represent for Spanish golf.”

The Ballesteros connection
The tribute has a personal element. Ayora has been managed by Javier Ballesteros, Seve’s eldest son, since turning professional in 2023 and became the first golfer to wear SEVE Collection. The brand connects modern performance apparel with the moments that shaped Ballesteros’ career, and its presence at Royal Birkdale on the 50th anniversary of that 1976 breakthrough adds another link to that history.
When Ayora steps onto the first tee, he will begin his Open journey on the same Southport links where a young Spaniard made his Open breakthrough half a century earlier.
