Anna Huang retained the PIF London Championship lead on Friday, but Charley Hull moved within one stroke by shooting a course-record 62 at Centurion Club.
Huang, the 17-year-old three-time Ladies European Tour winner from Canada, followed her opening 67 with a 5-under 68. She reached 11-under at the halfway stage, one ahead of Hull and three clear of Lydia Hall.
The second round was less controlled than Huang’s opening effort. She made three bogeys, but recovered those shots through four birdies and eagles at the par-5s 9th and 18th holes.
“It was another good round, but it was a little bit more up-and-down than yesterday,” Huang said after her round. “I had a couple of bad mistakes here and there, but it’s still something to be proud of.”
Huang had missed the cut in her previous two starts. She said greater trust in her game and familiarity with Centurion Club had helped her in Hertfordshire. Earlier this season, she became the youngest player to collect three LET titles, reaching the mark at 17 years, six months and 24 days.
Hull rewrites the Centurion record
Hull began the day seven strokes behind Huang after an opening 74, then completed a bogey-free 11-under round that equalled the lowest score in LET history.
The Englishwoman eagled the first and added four front-nine birdies to turn in 31. Five more birdies followed on the back nine, including gains at the 17th and 18th, as she broke the Centurion course record set by Georgia Hall in 2021.
Hull now shares the LET scoring record with Haeran Ryu and Jessica Korda as well as Alison Lee and Karrie Webb.
“It was really good, I shot 11-under and I actually left a couple of shots out there coming in,” Hull said. “I know that sounds pretty crazy, but it was a fun day.”
The five-time LET winner said she had felt exhausted following the AIG Women’s Open and had required physiotherapy for ongoing injuries. Given her physical condition, the 62 was unexpected, although she believed an even lower score had been available.
Hall leads the chasing group
Wales’ Lydia Hall holds third place at 8-under after a 6-under 67 featuring a chip-in eagle at the par-5 1st hole and seven birdies. A double bogey at the par-4 3rd and one further dropped shot prevented her from drawing closer to the lead.
Australia’s Kelsey Bennett and Irish rookie Aine Donegan share fourth at 7-under. Bennett carded a 71, while Donegan shot 69 after making five birdies across her opening eight holes.
Alice Hewson, Anne van Dam and Shannon Tan are tied at 6-under. Emma Spitz and Luna Sobron complete the top-10 at 5-under.
The cut fell at 3-over, with 64 players advancing. Saturday’s third round begins at 8am local time, and the leading group is scheduled to tee off at noon.
