Shane Lowry Wins Amgen Irish Open by Record 11 Shots

A closing 63 sealed his second Irish Open title and the largest winning margin in the event’s history.

Shane Lowry completed a record 11-shot victory at the Amgen Irish Open after a final-round 63 carried him to 23 under par at Trump International Golf Links Doonbeg.

The 39-year-old began Sunday four strokes clear and quickly established a commanding lead. Patrick Reed and Joaquín Niemann shared second place on 12-under, while Rasmus Neergaard-Petersen finished alone in fourth at 11-under.

Lowry’s winning margin surpassed the Irish Open record established by Bernhard Langer at Portmarnock Golf Club in 1987. He secured the new mark with a 29-foot birdie putt at the 18th, completing his second victory in Ireland’s national championship after winning as an amateur at County Louth in 2009.

The victory was also the 2019 Open champion’s seventh DP World Tour title.

Lowry takes control from the first

Lowry had moved three shots ahead with a course-record 62 on Friday, then extended his advantage to four with a third-round 65 in demanding conditions.

Lowry’s putting again proved crucial on Sunday. A 16-foot birdie at the 1st represented his tenth consecutive one-putt, and Jacob Skov Olesen’s bogey at the 2nd increased the lead to six.

Lowry converted another birdie at the 5th before holing from 43 feet on the fringe at the par-3 7th. A gain at the 8th took him to 20-under, making him the first player in the field to reach that mark.

His only bogey came at the 9th, just his sixth dropped shot of the tournament. Lowry responded with a tap-in birdie at the 10th before striking his tee shot close at the par-3 14th and making another long putt, this time from 44 feet, at the 15th.

The closing birdie completed a 7-under round and Lowry’s second score of 63 or better during the week.

Home victory follows difficult season

Lowry said the result carried extra weight after a challenging year in which several opportunities to win had passed him by.

“This year has been quite difficult on the course for me, I had a few chances to win and had some really tough times,” he said. “To come here this week and do this, I don’t do things by half measures. I can’t believe I’m standing here with that leaderboard.”

He also credited his family for supporting him through those setbacks.

“When things aren’t going well at this level, it’s hard at home as well and my wife and kids have been a huge support and I love them so much,” Lowry said. “I can’t wait to bring a trophy home, my daughter keeps asking ‘when will you bring a trophy home?’. So yes, I can bring one home.”

Reed and Niemann share second place

Reed produced the strongest early challenge with birdies at the 3rd, 4th, 6th, 8th, 9th and 10th. The Race to Dubai leader reached 12-under but parred his final eight holes.

Niemann joined him after mixing four birdies with one bogey. Neergaard-Petersen carded an eagle and five birdies in a bogey-free 63 to finish one shot behind the runners-up.

Gregorio De Leo also shot 63 to share fifth place with Tom McKibbin on 10-under. Alex Fitzpatrick and Olesen tied for seventh at 9-under, one ahead of Ewen Ferguson and Jens Dantorp.

Lowry also collected $30,000 for the Course Record presented by Nexo following his second-round 62.
