WGC – Workday Championship R4

Collin Morikawa wins fourth PGA title

February 25-28
The Concession Golf Club, Bradenton, Florida
$10,500,000
Round 1, Round 2, Round 3

Collin Morikawa started his final round of the World Golf Championships-Workday Championship with a two-shot lead that quickly narrowed when he bogeyed the par-4 2nd. He moved past it with four birdies over the next ten holes then parred his way to 69 and a three-shot victory. He has now won four times since his debut in 2019.

“With how good the field was, how good my game felt, to close it out with such a stacked leaderboard coming after me, it really means a lot,” said Morikawa.

Morikawa payed tribute to Tiger Woods in his own way by becoming the only other player to have won both a major and a World Golf Championship title before the age of 25, and the 24th overall.

Morikawa, one of the best iron players in the game, has often been let dow by his putting. He decided recently to try Mark O’Meara’s “saw” putting grip and sought him out for advice. There were no immediate visible results but he has kept it up.

“For some reason, I couldn’t sleep, and that’s never happened to me,” he said. “I’ve never thought about putting or golf this much in my life, because it felt so good. It just felt so different on how I was putting that I knew I was heading down the right path.”

He ranked 10th in the field in putting this week, gaining nearly four shots on the field, the second-best putting week of his Tour career.

“Now I feel confident I can take the stroke out of play and I can just really focus on speed, I can focus on the line, how do I get that ball to fall in the hole where I want it,” said Morikawa. “That’s what’s really exciting for me.”

This week at Concession he asked Paul Azinger for advice with his chipping technique and was seldom out of position the rest of the week.

“You don’t get to say thank you enough,” said Morikawa. “So, thank you, guys.”

Behind him at 15-under are Viktor Hovland, Brooks Koepka and Billy Horschel.

Hovland came closest to challenging Morikawa when he pulled within one shot after his seventh birdie at the 13th but a missed 40-foot birdie putt at the 14th, then a missed par putt putt an end to his chances.
