PING has launched a whole clutch of new Irons as the pioneering golf brand continues to engineer clubs to fit the needs of all skill levels.
Released this month, the first to feature are the new i240 irons – a players-style design that combines shot-making precision with score-saving forgiveness.
Second is the iDi driving iron series – designed for those better players looking for versatility and trajectory control.
The i240 Irons
PING introduced the i240 irons
“The new i240 irons are engineered to appeal to a wide range of skill levels,” said John K. Solheim, PING CEO & President.
“They provide precision and control with a great feel, so they technically fit into the ‘players iron’ category. But they also offer the MOI and higher launch of a game-improvement iron. We’ve designed it with more of a true cavity-back look to inform golfers of its forgiveness properties. They are a great solution for avid players who like the look, feel and performance of a blade-style iron but can also benefit from added forgiveness when they aren’t as precise with their ball striking. They pack a lot of performance into one model.”
i240: True Cavity-Back Design

A more traditional cavity design signifies the perimeter-weighting benefits of the iron while maintaining a clean, players-style look. The cavity badge and activated elastomer technology allow PING engineers to save significant weight, which is re-allocated within the clubhead to position the centre of gravity (CG) lower for more distance, increased control and higher launch. The weight savings also increase the MOI for more forgiveness, most notably in the long and mid irons.
“The i240 iron sits in the middle of our iron offerings, so it requires us to balance a variety of performance attributes that appeal to a wider range of golfers,” Solheim said.
“We’re seeing tighter dispersion and higher launch throughout the set that we know all players can appreciate. We’re also providing more distance in a way that is predictable and repeatable to ensure it meets the precise shot-making needs of the best players in the world.”

Pleasing Impact Experience
The multi-material badge, which is 8.5 grams lighter than the i230 badge, is comprised of a chrome-plated ABS with carbon fibre inlay. The activated elastomer insert supports the face, helping to provide more efficient energy transfer across the entire face and a softer feel and pleasing sound.
Tour Inspired
Balancing the needs of the top players in the world while expanding the performance features to attract a wider audience of golfers required a careful approach to the overall design. The face technology has been updated with a return to fewer and wider grooves, a request from tour pros in search of more spin from the fairway. The engineers also maintained the player-preferred size and shape for distance and trajectory control. The i240’s sole design is similar to previous designs, with a rounded lead edge and ample bounce to promote smooth turf interaction for clean and solid strikes.
“Meeting the needs of our tour pros and better players is important to the success of the i240 irons,” Solheim said.
“We continually seek the players’ feedback. The groove technology is a perfect example of us learning from them. They’ve reacted favourably to the new design, including the added forgiveness and higher launch, and we’re seeing more and more go into bags every week. Their validation of this design goes a long way in giving golfers the confidence that they can also benefit from the i240 irons and shoot lower scores.”

iDi Driving Iron Series
PING’s new iDi Driving Iron Series
“We continue to evolve our approach to engineering ‘top of the bag’ clubs for better players,” said PING CEO & President.
“We’ve seen excellent success with our Crossover products, and now we’re pushing further into the driving-iron space in a different way, with three lofts designed to provide ball-flight variation to help this level of player hit their precise trajectory windows. The iDi is a great option off the tee and for long approach shots into the green for golfers with higher swingspeeds.
“We’re especially excited about the technology inside the iDi. Our innovation team developed a technology we’re calling inR-Air. It’s literally a small pocket of air that’s inserted into the club that activates on impact to help attenuate the frequencies, greatly improving the feel and sound for this type of iron construction.”

More Than A Driving Iron
Loft offerings are optimized for launch and spin in 2 (17°), 3 (20°) & 4 (23°) irons.
The 2 iron is a traditional driving iron, delivering low launch and spin to provide maximum performance off the tee when course conditions call for it. The 3 iron (mid launch, mid spin) is designed as a driving iron or long-iron replacement. The 4 iron launches higher with more spin, making it easier to hold greens and is also recommended as a long-iron replacement.
All three lofts produce higher ball speeds to help ensure the distance a high-swing-speed player requires. The sources of the high ball speed are the thin, maraging steel face and lower CG position, which is closer to the impact location to produce more energy transfer. The chrome-plated face is robotically welded to the 17-4 stainless steel body to provide higher launch for better stopping power.
The 17-4 stainless steel head is both deeper front to back and the face is shallower. In addition, iDi is shorter heel-to-toe and the lie angle is 1° flatter to make it easier to turn over. For more control in shot making, each club is shorter than the previous generation. The fixed hosel allows for all 10 PING colour codes and custom loft adjustments.
PING iDi “The versatility of the three lofts is being very well received at the tour level”
“The versatility of the three lofts is being very well received at the tour level,” Solheim said.
“We see the iDi as a great alternative for certain types of course conditions or if someone is looking for a long-iron or fairway-wood replacement that offers their desired ball flight along with exceptional distance. From a fitting standpoint, it has a fixed hosel for more precise loft and lie adjustments. We expect to see several in play at next week’s Open Championship at Royal Portrush, where precision off the tee plays an especially important role on the seaside course.”
Engineered with inR-Air technology, the PING iDi Irons improve feel and sound
What’s Inside: inR-Air Technology
To help improve the feel and sound, the iDi irons are engineered with inR-Air technology, an advancement developed by PING’s innovation team. The patent-pending technology relies on an air pocket strategically placed inside the club behind the face to attenuate any undesirable frequencies that occur at impact. The integrated i-Beam structure inside the 17-4 stainless steel body also adds support and contributes to the improved sound and feel. Weight savings from the covered cavity, in addition to other shaping changes, help optimize the CG position and increase the MOI, especially on high/low impacts.
“inR-Air technology is a very cool innovation and an amazing accomplishment by our innovation and manufacturing engineering teams,” said Solheim.
“This type of iron construction always presents sound and feel challenges. The pocket of air is a great solution for softening the frequencies. We’re excited to bring this technology to golfers.”
