Jordan Spieth fired seven birdies and a 55-foot eagle putt on the par-5 18th to take a share of the lead alongside J.J. Spaun in the AT&T Byron Nelson with a 63.

"I'm just trying to get to tap-in and cap off a good day, and I kind of started leaning because I thought it was going to miss left and it just kind of fell in the left side of the hole," said Spieth of his eagle. "The roar was pretty electric."

Spaun has missed nine cuts in fifteen starts this season and tied for 18th last week in the Wells Fargo Championship, he has yet to win on Tour.

"It was a lot of searching," said Spaun. "I feel like that's something that us golfers kind of do too much of when things start to go wrong instead of just chalking it up to a bad week or couple weeks' slump with the striking."

TPC Craig Ranch, the new home of the tournament this year, afforded players little trouble on Thursday with 132 of the 156 players in the field under par and 95 of them in the 60s.

"It's a good golf course, but it's playing about as easy as it can play," said Aaron Wise (64), 2018 champion. "We got a ton of rain the last two days and then perfect weather today and looks like tomorrow and Saturday as well, so it's set up for scoring."

Defending champion Sung Kang fired a 67 on his home course, including an eagle at the par-5 9th, to tie for 34th at 5-under.

Jon Rahm is the highest-ranked player left in the field after Dustin Johnson had to withdraw because of knee problems and signed for a 68.
